I recently purchased a M1861 Navy revolver .36 caliber blue finish with a brass trigger.I wanted to get some history on it as well as an appraisal.
Any suggestions on where I might find info on it?

There are a number of arms and armor auction houses that will appraise it. Many of them offer free appraisals with no obligation to consign. Email them photographs and any provenance and they'll send you a ballpark figure. If it was cased, send pictures of the interior and exterior of the case.

By reputation, the most successful houses are:

Little John's
James Julia
Rock Island
Greg Martin
Amoskeag

I used to work at one of these places, which I won't identify because I don't want to favor them. I don't particularly like them, but they're still fair, and I never knew the consigners to be the least bit dishonest. (I would often be in the background listening to them appraise something, decide the worth, then call the consigner.)

If they give you any pressure at all to consign, kick them to the curb.

I would second Collector's Firearms. Mike Clark is one of the good guys in the antique arms & armor industry. He's got a good rep. I saw him a couple times a year, and he was always good-natured and friendly. And the fact that he has an employee devoted solely to maintaining the FFL A&D book gives him even more props in my book.
