Today on Russian news I've read something about the Monument for Georgian WW2 heroes which was recently destroyed in Kutaisi.
There seem to be plans to rebuild it in Moscow.
Googled for it and found this article:

Putin blasts Georgia for ‘erasing Soviet past’
(AFP)

22 December 2009,
MOSCOW - Russian Prime Minster Vladimir Putin Tuesday slammed the controversial demolition of a war memorial in Georgia as a plot to erase the common past of the two countries within the Soviet Union.

The Russian strongman proposed that the World War II memorial be rebuilt in Moscow, pointedly reminding Georgia that the city was once the shared capital of their united Soviet state.

“This is yet another attempt to erase from the collective memory of the people of the former Soviet Union the memory of their common past and of their heroic history,” Putin said in comments broadcast on state television.

“I think it’s possible to rebuild this monument in the capital of our once united state: Moscow.”

The memorial was demolished in the Georgian city of Kutaisi Saturday on the order of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, provoking vehement protests from Russia.

A seven-year-old girl and her mother were accidentally killed in the work to raze the memorial, the Georgian interior ministry said.

Georgia, which gained sovereignty with the collapse of the USSR in 1991, has sought to distance itself from its Soviet past since Saakashvili came to power in the 2003 pro-Western “Rose Revolution”.

Ties with Russia remain strained since the two countries’ fought a war in August 2008 over the Moscow-backed rebel Georgian region of South Ossetia.

Putin has repeatedly expressed his respect for the achievements of the Soviet Union and famously described its collapse as the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe” of the 20th century.

Personally I've got mixed feelings about that one.
I do think Georgian WW2 veterans deserve better then having their memorial blown up - and action is better then empty criticism but it's BS for Russia to pay for Saakashvilli's idiocy.

If it will be true wish of georgian people and it will accept creator of monument, why not?

Or if in Moscow will be no place for monument we can build it on Nauru island.

if it's the wish of Georgian people they should get Saakashvilli to build it - he destroyed it afterall. :)

Does Russia have a lot of cash lying around? Invest the money into other Russian regions instead.. Since the 1990's the only places that have been receiving substantial cash are Moscow region, St. Petersburg and Caucasians republics like Chechnya and now Abahzia and South Ossetia..

i firmly believe ther's an attempt to discredit what the Russians sacrificed to fight the germans, there's a terrible conspiracy to highlight only allied contribution in the war.
What Stalin did was his actions but you can't discredit the sacrifice of all the people because of stalin...

Monument was for Georgian soldiers, built and designed by Georgians. This is hardly a Russian issue at all, but it should disgust every individual with an iota of consciousness. I can't even call it populism, since most Georgians were against it, but rather a personal vendetta crusade by the very little cowrdly "man" with a very big coke problem.

Putin proposes rebuilding Georgia's war memorial in Moscow

MOSCOW, December 22 (RIA Novosti)
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin suggested on Tuesday that Russia rebuild in Moscow a World War II memorial demolished in a botched operation by Georgian authorities in Kutaisi.
An eight-year-old girl and her mother were killed during Saturday's demolition of the Glory Memorial, when explosives used to topple the structure sent large chunks of concrete hurtling into a residential area.
"This was yet another attempt to erase the common Soviet past from the memory of former Soviet nations, including their heroic past," Putin said.
"Therefore, I believe it is possible to rebuild the memorial in Moscow, the capital of once a unified state."
Sculptor Merab Berdzenishvili, the creator of the war memorial, said he had no objections to the memorial being rebuilt in Russia.
He earlier said the demolition was an insult to the memory of thousands of Georgian soldiers who gave their lives in World War II, and opposition activists staged protests.
A Georgian opposition figure said the memorial should also be rebuilt in Kutaisi.
"We will do that when we come to power," said Zurab Nogaideli, leader of the For a Just Georgia opposition movement.
Georgian authorities say the memorial was removed to make way for a new parliamentary building.
The Georgian government has said that the relocation of the Georgian parliament from Tbilisi to Kutaisi will boost the development of western Georgia. However, the move has sparked protests among Kutaisi residents and the Georgian opposition.
Moscow earlier said Tbilisi had challenged the entire international community, defying the latest resolution by the UN General Assembly condemning the destruction of WWII memorials.

Georgian opposition protests against demolition of war memorial in Kutaisi

TBILISI, December 21 (Itar-Tass) -- The leaders and activists of several opposition Georgian parties held a peaceful protest in Kutaisi on Monday against the demolition of a war memorial in this city on December 19 that resulted in the death of two people.
About 2,000 people and the leaders of several parties attended the event, including Zurab Nogaideli (former prime minister and the head of the movement For a Just Georgia), Salome Zourabichvili (former foreign minister and the leader of the Georgia’s Way party), Temur Shashiashviil (former Imereti governor, presidential ex-candidate and leader of the Tetrebi party), Gubaz Sanikidze (leader of the opposition National Forum), and others.
They criticised the authorities for their policy and said “the fight against monuments is unacceptable and criminal”.
The speakers said they would insist on the dynamited war memorial be restored in the same place and an Orthodox church be built nearby in memory of those who died during the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War and the woman and her eight-year-old daughter killed during the demolition last Saturday.
Nogaideli said earlier that the government’s policy with regard to monuments was “cynical”.
“The decision to dismantle the war memorial in Kutaisi was made by the authorities without taking into account the opinion of the public and without any need,” he said.
“There is enough room around the war memorial for the construction of new buildings for the Georgian parliament and there was no need to dismantle the memorial,” Nogaideli said.
He blamed authorities for the death of two people who were killed during the blasting work at the construction site.
Georgia’s Main Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the death of two people during the demolition of the war memorial.
Chief prosecutor Murtas Zodelava told journalists, “Two persons died during the dismantling of a part of the memorial that was carried out by a private company under a contract with the Kutaisi municipal authorities.”
“According to preliminary information, the tragedy occurred because occupational safety rules were not fully compiled with during the operation,” he said.
“All persons responsible for incident will be brought to justice,” the prosecutor said.
Chunks of concrete killed a woman and her eight-year-old daughter who were standing several dozen metres from the war memorial. The site is fenced off, but obviously too close to the place of the work.
Another two local residents received injuries and were hospitalised, local mass media and law enforcement reported.
The investigation of the incident is underway.

When I heard they demolished this memorial I just thought they were as retarded as the Taliban and now I learn that 2 people died I might be inclined to think that Georgia needs a regime change.p-)

First of all, comparing to Taliban is retarded, simply retarded. However if you do want to be precise in your comparison consider what Taliban did and how communists were blowing up churches.

Secondly, all the sculptures and plated were removed so the actual base was blown up in Kutaisi.

Thirdly, in Georgia there are WW2 monuments in practically every town and often more than one, so the accusations that they are trying to somehow erase their past or offend all WW2 veterans is simply ridiculous.

Fourth, that monument in Kutaisi was in the middle of nowhere and not looked after very well. Hardly the most important symbol of them all.

Furthermore, if Russians are screaming so much about Georgians demolishing the monument and are such righteous people they should certainly set a good example and not destroy their own WW2 monuments:

Monument to soviet soldiers who died in WW2, destroyed in Barnaul in 2008
Monument table dedicated to 40-ies anniversary of WW2 victory, destroyed in Blagoveshensk in 2008
Monument to soviet soldiers who died in WW2, destroyed in Samara in 2008, table with names of those brave men was taken to the city skip.
Monument to soviet soldiers who died in WW2, destroyed in Pervouralsk in 2008.
Monument to soviet soldiers who died in WW2, destroyed in Stavropol in 2007.
Monument to soviet pilots who died in WW2, destroyed in Himki (Next to Moscow) in 2007, bodies of 16 burried soldiers were dug out and allegedly re-buried somewhere. There were two official reasons for knocking down the one in Himki - it was located next to the place where prostitutes were gathering often and second reason that it was decided to extend the motorway and monument was on the way.

Yeah, another moment, Mr Putin, when he made that statement that the monument would be built in Moscow, said on a TV that the monument was destroyed in Tbilisi rather than Kutaisi, which sort of highlights how much he really gives a damn about it.

Georgian ex-PM to discuss WWII memorial rebuilding in Moscow

TBILISI, December 23 (RIA Novosti)
Georgian opposition leader and former premier Zurab Nogaideli will discuss with Russian officials on Wednesday the rebuilding of a WWII memorial demolished in Georgia.
The Glory Memorial in Kutaisi was destroyed in a botched operation on December 19 that claimed the lives of two people. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin proposed that Russia rebuild the monument in Moscow.
"The rebuilding of the memorial destroyed in Kutaisi and Putin's initiative... has been included in the agenda of the discussions," Nogaideli, who is the leader of the opposition movement For a Just Georgia, told journalists at Tbilisi airport on Tuesday evening.
Georgian authorities say the memorial was removed to make way for a new parliamentary building.
The government has said that the relocation of the Georgian parliament from Tbilisi to Kutaisi will boost the development of western Georgia. However, the move has sparked protests among Kutaisi residents and the Georgian opposition.
Moscow earlier said Tbilisi had thrown down a challenge to the entire international community, defying the latest resolution by the UN General Assembly condemning the destruction of WWII memorials.
Nogaideli said he would also discuss with his Russian colleagues the resumption of air traffic between Russia and Georgia, as well as exports of Georgian goods to Russia. Issues relating to the registration of Georgian citizens in Russia are also to be discussed, he said.
The Georgian opposition leader is expected to meet with Russian parliamentarians and government members during his visit to Moscow, the third in a month and a half.
During his previous stay in the Russian capital in late November, Nogaideli said several charter flights between Moscow and Tbilisi would be organized during the New Year holidays.
The Georgian air company Airzena - Georgian Airlines earlier asked Russia's aviation authorities to permit direct charter flights between Tbilisi and Moscow in the period from December 26 to January 15. Russia's transport ministry spokesman said on Tuesday the ministry in considering a Georgian Airways air company's application for the organization of ten charter flights in the periods from December 26 to December 30 and from January 6 to January 10.
Direct air traffic between the Russian and the Georgian capitals was suspended in 2006 due to worsening in relations between the two countries. Later, flights were resumed for a short period, but were cancelled again in August 2008, after a five-day war with Georgia over South Ossetia, which was attacked by Tbilisi in an attempt to bring it back under central control

Russia to rebuild destroyed Georgian WWII memorial in Moscow

MOSCOW, December 23 (RIA Novosti)
Moscow, the city mayor said on Wednesday.
"I believe that tomorrow we will choose the site, following orders from Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin]," Yury Luzhkov said.
Prime Minister Putin proposed on Tuesday that Russia rebuild the Glory Memorial. Merab Berdzenishvili, who completed the original in 1981, has supported the idea, but said the blueprints and miniatures have been lost.
Luzhkov said Moscow will build an exact copy, and that representatives of Georgian expatriate community will contribute to financing.
During the demolition of the Glory Memorial in Kutaisi, an eight-year-old girl and her mother were killed, when explosives used to topple the structure sent large chunks of concrete hurtling over a wide area.

I personally think that it will be relocated somewhere else in Georgia. As the Parliament in Tbilisi is going to be useless anyway, I think they can put it their.

BTW Kutaisi is where my family is from. Use to be the ancient Capitol of Georgia, and now it will be the Capitol once again. It needs a revitalization.
