I really enjoyed Black Hawk Down. It is my favorite movie, and it is special to me because I want to be a US Army Ranger. I'm starting my quest in a few months, when I join the US Army. I hope to be able to put my knowledge to work, gaining more knowledge!

I need to go rent that movie "Winter War", as I am a Russian "stuff" collector and Mosin Nagant collector, plus I am impressed by the Finn's incredible resilience under such extreme pressure, against so many Russians.

Oorah, guys. I'm out. p-)

Band of Brothers (it´s really cool altough it looks like if germans were stupid )
Bravo Two Zero (good movie, some mistakes but doesn´t mind much :P)
Full Metal Jacket (it´s just cool... woot)

Ok, that´s my aspect, Bye, David

well, it depends how you define "war movie". does it only play in a war setting, or is it about soldiers going to war?

apocalypse now, platoon, full metal jacket, thin red line are all artistic attempts to describe the horror of war (the horror! the horror!). i enjoy watching these movies a lot.

three kings, the pianist, steiner 1 are also some favorites of mine.

black hawk down, we were soldiers, et al are action movies in a war setting. bhd is cream of the crop, but just as an action movie. life is not an action movie. movies like these can be dangerous for naive people.

i did see hamburger hill once, but can't remember if it was good or bad.

ok, your turn.

BHD is an action movie? I think it shows very good how hard and bad war is... :|

The Pianist was a good war movie because it shows what it's like being in the middle of a war as a non-combatant. It's a view that's not often shown.

Do you guys know of any MODERN US MILITARY MOVIES? Black Hawk Down is probably the most popular.... Im not talking OLD wwii/vietnam/civil war stuff.. The ones I've seen so far are:

Black Hawk Down(75th ranger regiment)
3 Kings
Clear and Present Danger(More politics than action, but the "less than 15 minutes" of action is worth to see the entire movie for the light infantry recon squad, I think the movie sucked compared to the book becuase the action in the book couldve been made into a BHD type movie)

Anything else? Remember.. MODERN US MILITARY, dont even count action movies like matrix or swat movies

What about Braveheart? Or Gladiator( at least the first scene) They actually showed us clips of those movies at OCS to fire us up. My favorite and I am pretty sure every one else in my company's was a clip they showed us before each class:

I forgot to add Tigerland to my list, and while it may not be the most technically correct movie ever made, all hale Top Gun. It has to be one of the greatest films, military, action, whatever genre you choose, of all time.

There are so many good movies out there from any country. One that I'm almost ashamed that I forgot is the Red band of Courage.
Ok, it is an Black and White movie, made in 1950. But so what? It is still a very good movie. Though I know all you Americans know this book/movie, maybe some of the "foreigners" doesnt. I really reccomend this movie., due to the fact that it tell us an important story about human behaviour in time of dire stress. Here is a short summary:
"Based on Stephen Crane's classic novel, this is a story about a frightened boy, Henry Fleming (Audie) who went into battle and came out of it a man with courage. He's really scared on the inside but talks tough on the outside. He finds that being in battle causes him to panic and run away. He sees his comrades wounded and regards them in an envious way wishing that he too had a red badge of courage. He gathers back his courage and leads the men on an aggressive attack carrying the colors. He is later recognized by the general for leading the charge. This movie was directed by the legendary John Huston who insisted over the protests of studio executives that Audie play the lead role. This is one of Audie's finest performances. "

No. But it's a "war" movie, and it's both fun to watch and plausible. I didn't see anything in the thread about "infantry/SF only."

GearGod
02-15-2003, 11:59 PM
heh i think its pretty much "implied" because some airsofters can relate to infantry/sf combat becuase they do it when playing airsoft... submarine fans however, cant say the same

Apogee
02-16-2003, 12:36 AM
I think thats BS. Airsoft is a game. Nothing less, nothing more. In no way does PLAYING airsoft put you on the same level with a soldier who trains night and day to go into combat. Sure they both envolve camo and tactical gear, but I think the harsh reality of what a soldier will one day face clearly delineates (spelling?) the two. Just my thoughts as a member of the military....

"In no way does PLAYING airsoft put you on the same level with a soldier who trains night and day to go into combat"

I dindt say that. I said airsofters can relate to infantry/sf. I dindt say they are equal.

"Sure they both envolve camo and tactical gear"

And some military tactics too, some becuase of the lack of long distance shooting-which can be fixed by using MILES in addition to airsoft

What I was trying to say was that if one was a fan of infantry/sf they could get almost all the gear and weapon, start a team, train, and play against each other military style. That kind of simulation is only 2nd to the military's MILES/Simunition systems. The same can be said about video games. They can somewhat relate to 1)some of the gear that infantr/sf wears 2)some of the tactics that infantry/sf uses.

Remember, Any airsofter who considers themself equal to infantry/sf are usually EX-military.

BTW, whats USMA? US Marines A??

maybe, but most would agree the majority of the photos on this website are infantry/sf. Take US Afghanistan gallery for example:

http://www4.aixgaming.com/opend/American_Forces_In_Afghanistan

Most are photos of infantry/sf units i.e. PERSONNEL and not subs etc. So when one asks "best war movies" I BELIVE that one would expect to see infantry/sf movies listed and not sub movies.. But starving student took it as a "best war movies in general" which I agree with him that its "plausible" :D

Key word being "most," not "all." In the Operation Anaconda collection, there's several shots of Cobra helicopters, some variety of a heavy tank, and pictures of giant smoke plumes (B-52s? Tomahawk missiles?). In the Somalia collection, there's tons of pictures of Black Hawks. In the Israel collection, there's a Merkava battle tank and an anti-aircraft turret. In the Chechnya collection, there's an artillery piece and an AA gun. In the Kuwait collection, there are quite a few tank photos.

So while I agree that this site is *primarily* aimed at infantry issues, I don't think I can be blamed for including Crimson Tide on my best war movies list. The "majority" of my list was infantry-oriented too ;)

This is not an all time war movie. It's not even a war movie, but it gives an insight to what special operations soldiers, especially SAS & CAG operators do after they retire from the military. If anyone has any book titles concerning this subject can you please post them. Thanks in advance. :)

To the other movies that have been put forward, I would add Cross of Iron. I don't know how realistic it is, but it was done by Sam Peckinpah, I think.

Also, Regeneration. I think that's the title for the U.S. release, but I may be wrong--that might be the title for the original Canadian? release. It stars Jonathan Pryce as a WWI army psychiatrist at an army hospital in the U.K. and is a fictional account of the friendship between Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sasson, both of whom were poets as well as soldiers. A good movie highlighting the horros of the First World War.

timetraveller is spot on!

If you can find Iranian warmovies from Iran/Iraq war they are the best! They are filmed italian neo realistic style, no heroes or famous filmstars. Just the camera, the small bou with the bayonett in the ground, the special forces commando trying to pass by iraqi soilders in the marshes. etc small stories that link together to something big. No supermen, no rambos and not much allah either. Pure ****ing quality.

My list

All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

Probably one of the best war movies ever, youll never notice its from 1930. It captures the spirit of conscripts very well + reaction from wannabe civilians, simply this movie is a must watch.

Voyina awesome russian movie

Casualties of War (1989) - A bit liberal but has points.

The Desert Rats (1953) Youre not a true anzac unless you seen this

Enemy at the Gates (2001) Wonderfull cinematics of stalingrad

Framom främsta linjen (2004) Winter war basicly

Jarhead (2005) One of the few movies than can realisticly capture soilder sentiment and the "feeling in the group/unit"
'

Kagemusha (1980) Master akira kurosawas japanese wars.

No Man's Land (2001) Pure quality of balkan tragedy, un soilders see this.

Untergang, Der (2004) Quality officers and death of hitler.

Battaglia di Algeri, La (1966) Insurgency, Insurgency Insurgency

Apocalypse Now (1979) I like it but few of our military fans fail to realize that this movie is a liberal bias trying to paint all soilders as nutters.

Bronenosets Potyomkin (1925) Battleship potemkin, see it!

Battle of the Bulge (1965)

A Bridge Too Far (1977)

The Bunker (2001)

Cross of Iron (1977)

The Eagle Has Landed (1976)

Empire of the Sun (1987)

The Great Escape (1963)

The Killing Fields (1984)

Platoon (1986)

Southern Comfort (1981)

Xi chu bawang (1994)

Battle of Britain (1969)

The Beast of War (1988) russian

The Colditz Story (1955)

The Cruel Sea (1953)

The Dam Busters (1955)

Dunkirk (1958)

The Guns of Navarone (1961)

Kelly's Heroes (1970)

The Misfit Brigade (1987)

Reach for the Sky (1956)

I remember reading in the one of the dvd mags that " Southern Comfort " has been re released on Special Edt format ..

I never knew untill i read it when the film was first shown there was few battles between those In Reserve units and those from the Marsh areas .. because of that it got pulled from the Cinema's then re-released again in but less resentment between the two ..

Quality film .. Cult classic imo , And Guns of Navarone .. i wonder if the Guns will ever be raised .. from the Med ..or has there been under sea footage take of the Guns ..

The problem with the film Industry .. The marketin only concentrates on UK/US financed films ..

It's very hard to find Foregin films shown in the Cinema unless there backed with US/UK money

City of God -Brazillian Film , You wouldn't see such a film made of this quality in America never mind the Uk ..
Only in the mags that foreign films get some coverage ..

Another film called " the Terrorist .." An Indian film won a few awards and the US John Malkovich made sure it got a US release ..

A few others...

The Big Red One - It gets hokey and tends to overdramatization at times, but the basic truth still comes through.

Empire of the Sun - Another side to battle and combat.

Der Untergang - A dramatic view of the perverse insanity of the Nazi regime.

IMO Beyond Enemy Lines is the worst finnish war movie I've seen, right after Rukajärven Tie/Ambush. Talvisota/Winter War (The longer cut) and both versions of Tuntematon Sotilas/Unknown Soldier are by far superior compared to those two.

Talvisota has typical finnish film-making clumsiness in it, but it's still better.

http://www.youtube.com/v/x5ySfEWmrLo

Åke Lindman, the director of Beyond Enemy Lines, is making a new war movie, called Tali-Ihantala, which will be in theatres this christmas. Hopefully it will be better than Beyond Enemy Lines. Apparently, it's going to be the most expensive finnish movie since Talvisota...

Na hood, all European war movies are like that, I agree Pianist is pretty damn good one compared to all this euro crap...

I myself like Thin Red Line, except letters to home part, can't stand this cheap-poor trick in any sort of movies. On other hand when it comes to favorite scene in a war movie I liked "video from home" in Jarhead, probably only decent scene in the whole movie :)

One of the best war movies ive seen so far was definatly Letters from Iwo-Jima.

You really could feel how intense this battle was and how strong a will to survive can be.

Found it so good that i watched it again later in the original japanese subtitled version.

Talvisota has typical finnish film-making clumsiness in it, but it's still better.

Um, could you be more precise? What are the clumsy things in Talvisota? The only thing that bothers me is the few petrol bomb explosions just before the first battle and towards the end of the film.

Hi

i'm looking for a WW2 movie.

this is a Black and White movie where the whole scenario is set up in the desert. It's a tank (desert rat?) which is lost in the desert looking for water. In the search, the crew finds some lost ally and eny soldiers and decides to help them. he also takes down a nazi plane and decides to help the pilot. At the end of the movie, all eny soldiers are surrounding the lone tank, holding a well, and eny soldiers then surrender to the tank because of thirsty.

Does anybody remember what movie it was?

thank you

It's a great film on so many levels, and even gets a good performance out of Matthew Broderick.

'Charging Fort Wagner' - the scene and the accompanying orchestral piece make for a spine-chilling, emotional experience. If not the best, then Glory is certainly oneof the best war movies of all time.

Even though the movie at times has dubious historical qualities, it still represents the unit extremely well and that last battle in particular is a great scene, I agree entirely.

My favourite War Movies are.

1.Zulu
2.Bridge too Far
3.Battle of Britain

1. Saving Private Ryan.
2. Band of Brother. (BOB)
3. Platoon. (Oliver Stone)
-- I am surprised this movie is not so popular here. IMHO, this could be the best Vietnam War movie, though might not be political right in U.S., way better than 'We were soldiers' (a political right movie).
4. Forrest Gump.
-- Although this is not really a War movie, the Vietnam War scene in this movie had made me believed that the director were able to produce a Vietnam War version of Saving Private Ryan.
5. Tora! Tora! Tora!
-- Much better than 'Pearl Harbor'.
6. Hamburger Hill.
7. Apocalypse Now.
8. Empire of the Sun
9. Enemy at the Gates
10. Black Hawk Down.

I haven't seen it in a couple of years though and I do belive that I need to buy. Now!

And We Were Soldiers..? Eh... I mean, nice action movie and all that. The explosions are jolly and everything but, and this is a big but, why didn't they make it good? Crap movie.

A great war/spy flick is Operation Daybreak starring Timothy Bottoms. It was made in the 70's and it's about the assasination of Hydrich in WWII occupied Prauge by a group of British trained assasins. It's based on true events with only minor embelishment.

Some of my favorites (keep in mind that this is just entertainment)

Saving Private Ryan
Tears of the Sun
The Beast
Tora Tora Tora
We Were Soldiers...
Bat 21
Uncommon Valor
A Bridge Too Far
Dirty Dozen

Rambo 1-4 (yes I said Rambo)
Commando (I just can't help it)
Red Dawn
Men of War (better than you would think)

That's all I can think of right now

I mean come on. Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Ferris Buller. Best cast ever.

Denzel won his first Oscar for this movie, one which he rightly deserved.

In no particular order, except for "ZULU"

1. Zulu (alot of inaccuracies though)
2. Saving private Ryan
3. A bridge too far
4. 9th Company (Russian language)
5. The Star (Russian language)
6. Ice Cold in Alex (Sir John Mills)
7. The Dambusters (Richard Todd)
8. Went the day well
9. The way ahead (David Niven)
10. Dunkirk (Sir John Mills)

Although not in my top ten, I'll give the "Kakoda Trail" a special mention.

Personally, I think alot of the Vietnam War films are lame.

My "Worst War Film" would be 'The Green Berets.' Sorry Duke.

As a footnote, any film with Sir John Mills is excellent but that's just my opinion.

That is a fantastic movie, every time I watch it I get lost in it.
That Castle they filmed it at is possibly one of the best film/locations I've ever seen. Richard Burton & Clint Eastwood is pure win all across the board.

I'm surprized to see The Thin Red Line only mentioned twice in this thread so far. My favorite film to date, and no, don't start comparing it with any other warfilm out there. It's not supposed to be an action-packed film full of realistic gore and sexy scenes like BHD or whatever.

Black Hawk Down is good, but the book is better, as for series Generation Kill wasn't like Band of Brothers, but it was different and amazing.

Which one Mel Gibson or Steven Seagal?

IMHO this is one of his better movies, I think there's a ton of humanity involved, yet he's still a BAMF. And yes it was a joke, Mel Gibson's Patriot was an interesting family story and the battle sequences were great except for Yorktown not being historically accurate.

Gods and Generals was grossly overacted, ridiculous trash. I could not watch more than an hour of it. I laughed out loud when one character started chatting with his wife, sounding like a cross between a really bad British Shakespearean actor and a pompous politician trying his worst to sound noble and full of gravitas. Nobody talks that way. It was a bad farce, and excruciating to try and view.

The Thin Red Line sucked a yak's ball hair. I wish I had those, what was it, 2.5 hours of my life back. It glorifies someone who went AWOL. On top of that, it tried to be artistic and throw in metaphores everywhere. But it failed in that aspect. F*ck that movie.

Come and See by Elem Klimov is hands-down the best war film I have ever seen, in fact, it is one of the best films I have ever seen. I can not recommend this enough, the first time I saw it I was absolutely blown away.
I am a pretty cynical guy, especially when it comes to cinema, but this film made me believe that cinema is a worthy pursuit.
See it as soon as possible. I don't have enough words to praise it.

I also really like Afghan Breakdown - directed by Vladimir Bortko.
When I was a kid I loved a Bridge too far (Richard Attenborough) Das Boot (Wolfgang Petersen) and the Bridge on the River Kwai (David Lean)

oh yeah, I also really like Soldier of Orange (Paul Verhoeven) even though it is inaccurate- it's still awesome!

/EDIT/ oh yeah, also Regeneration (Gillies MacKinnon) - incredible film with outstanding performances from the cast, very moving.
I also really enjoyed Stalingrad (Vilsmaier)
The Deer Hunter (Michael Cimino) and the Wild Bunch (Peckinpah) will always be dear to me because these were shown to me by my Father (his two favourite movies).

The truth is if you read the book, it's weirder than the movie and all these strange ass things that happen in the movie happen in greater frequency in the novel, so if you got issues with the movie I really think you need to speak with the Author about his time in the Army, because he's relating what happened to us through fiction. And btw it's taken me a long time to read the book and I'm still not done.

Ted Turner and Ron Maxwell were being extremely ambitious with the project and there are pieces that they didn't put in which I'm still wanting a directors cut so I could see it all.
The trailer made me think it would be amazing, I enjoyed it though.
The scene you're talking about is a Confederate mother and in the town of Fredericksburg.
The scene should be in this 10 minute clip. At about the five minute point.
