Iran suffered immensely after it was invaded by the Allies during World War II and deserves reparations, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a live broadcast on state television Saturday.

The hard line Iranian President has ordered the formation of a team to study the damages the country suffered from the 1941 Allied invasion in order to demand compensation.

"You inflicted lots of damages to the Iranian nation, put your weight on the shoulders [of the Iranian people] and became victors in the World War II. You didn't even share the war profits with Iran," Ahmadinejad said.

"If I say today that we will take full compensation ... know that we will stand to the end and will take it."

Ahmadinejad didn't elaborate on the details but he had earlier said he would write to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to ask that Iran be compensated for the damages caused to its people during the war and for the use of its territory and resources by Allied powers.

"A team has been assigned to calculate all the damages (inflicted on Iran) in the Second World War. This will be an invoice they (Allies powers) must pay to the Iranian nation," said Ahmadinejad.

Britain and the Soviet Union invaded Iran on August 26, 1941, codenamed
Operation Countenance to secure Iranian oil fields and ensure supply lines for the Soviets fighting Axis forces.

Food, fuel and other essentials were scarce amid mounting inflation and there was great hardship on the Iranian people as the needs of invading powers were given priority.

Ahmadinejad also warned that Iran may also demand compensation for the damages it suffered during World War I, the Western support for the former Pahlavi Dynasty and its hostility towards Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution

Ahmadinejad has a new distraction every other day and they are getting more foolish though to be fair he is not the only leader that keeps the the spectre of WW2 needlessly alive and I feel the lessons of time have been learned as well as man can and a big fat line should be drawn through it.

Things would really work out well if Moscow would take offence to this and cut all ties with Iran and allies like Syria as a result. If only..

First hit up Greece, followed by the Saudis (you know that whole Arab/Islamization thing), and finally ask the UK to pony up.

After they have all paid up, send the USA a detailed, itemized bill, with original receipts, as proof of expense. We'll let Congress consider it.

With their wishes possibly, but other than that Persia declared itself neutral in WWII. However, that did not prevent that the British teamed up with the Soviets, and invaded the country to divide it up. Essentially classic imperialism. Britain did have a great interest in controlling Persia in the first half of the 20th century because this was the first Middle Eastern country where oil was found in large amounts. (Arabian countries were only important oil producers from the sixties onwards). In WWII the British needed Stalin's cooperation, however. Then, about ten years after the worldwar, the US essentially told the British to leave and took over the part of dominating Iran, until the Iranian Revolution 1979.

Well, why not? Lots of groups play the WW2 card, whether to get something from Germany, or from Russia, or from their local authorities, or from Switzerland... So well, why not Iran? After all, they were invaded.
