My EOTech 552 recently died on me. I switched it off and when I tried to switch it back on, gone.. A friend said that it's long been an issue with EOTech. I like the sight because of it's wide view and the reticle, although it seems as if the Aimpoint is far more durable and faster to get into action. I did a search but did not see any threads pertaining to issues with EOTech. Anyone care to comment on this? My 552 is around 2005 production, perhaps the later ones have had updates addressing this issue? I'm thinking of getting the EOTech XPS. Thanks.

Changed batteries? You may also need to check the battery contacts on the inside. The might have some corrosion on them. Same thing happened to mine.. around 2005 production as well..Also, was it blinking beforehand ie. low batt indicator?

I know there was a problem with the EOtech 553/516 . The problem with the pre mar/07 was they suffered battery connections failures, it might be worth while taking it apart and checking the connections. I have heard other complain at the range, when their 552 fail.
I prefer ACOG, requires no batteries.

Check the battery contacts. I've heard the same complaints for the 2005 551 model (N-type batteries).

I've seen that on the EOTechs before - the problem seems to lie in battery housing springs - the ones that press on the battery from the bottom. Sometimes they seem to lack the stiffness and more violent gun recoil, or charging the cocking handle more agressively in AK caused AA batteries to recoil back as a counterweight inside the battery housing, squeezeing the springs too much and thus break the electrical circut killing the sight instantly. You had to turn it on anew and it functioned ok, until next violent recoil. We has some improvised methods to prevent this - but still it was a design fault. That's what we observed on AK's and its clones in several cases. XPS should solve this problem due to diffrent battery placement.

Some times the NV button is pressed by mistake......:)
I did that in a 553.....

My EOTech 552 is as old as yours and is doing the same thing. It's the contact points and I'm not sure how to fix it.

Yeah, thats one option - the second is to get that XPS if he prefers HWS display style. XPS should'nt have any of these mechanical issues we discuss here.
And Defoor method is what we did with EOTechs springs here (extending them a bit by pulling), but I had my dobuts before if I should reccomend that method to anyone, because it may damage the spring if done improperly.

Agreed. Has anyone had any luck going back to EOTech with these issues??

Thanks so much for your help guys! Appreciate it.. It's the battery springs alright. My 552's working now. woot But it's probably time to shell out for a new XPS anyway.. Or an Aimpoint..

My tiny word of advice on choosing between them is the Magnifier use. EOTech reticle generally seems to be sharper when viewed through Magnifiers - Aimpoint's or their own device. Newer Aimpoint dot although smaller (2MOA) than on earlier models (4MOA) lacks the sharpness of the EOTech and looks bit blurry to my eyes when using the Mag.
Having said that I'd probably still chose Micro Aimpoint over Eotech, but that's me.

my 553 shuts off on me from time to time, specially during rapid fire, sucks when you spend $640 on something you expect it to do as it says it would do

Catch22, Thanks for your input. I've been thinking of getting a magnifier but I've presently no experience with one. Are the results similar to having a 4x Trijicon ACOG? Another option that I've been considering is the Trijicon TA26SG-10 1.5x16 with the green dot and circle reticle. At least it's a very compact package and appears to be optimum for urban scenarios from 10 out to around 200 yrds. Anyway, I'm straying from my own article already.
Pook2, Saigasig's post on kyledefoor seems a worthwhile try. At least mine is working now. I've another one with the same problem stashed somewhere, now I've to go look for it and not let it go to waste collecting dust.
theProfessor, I was thinking the same thing. And how could something built for and in widespread use by LE/MIL all over the world be so finicky and troublesome?

I have an Eotech 552 that is fairly well used and is about 6 years old. No problems with any function problems. It has been banged and brusied, but still up 100 percent. I have hit it on doors and door frames, and dropped it on rocks and it still functions. One thing I like is that when you need BUIS, it allows a clear view and I can picture the red circle even with it off. You spend enough time using it and you can almost picture the donut through the glass.

Too little range time with ACOG to compare properly - however ACOG picture always seemed clearer and brighter to me than Magnifier+CCO/HWS. I'd keep each to its own primary role. On this miniature Trijicon - I only seen it and played with it but never shot it - from impression I had I'd rather use EOTech or Aimpoint for that role. Not to mention the price is rather high.

well incoherent, atleast mine is, my service weapon is fitted by a comp 3 and never any problems whatsoever, i got a eotech 553 for my own, i love how its a big and wide window and big reticle, but man when u go rapid fire mine just shuts off, i am going to send it back to eotech and either get a replacment or my money back. i am going to go stick to my irons from now on, this isnt my duty gun just range and possibly home defense really no reason to have $700 optics anyways, going to put the carry handle back on but leave the M900 surefire

One word: Aimpoint!
Seriously though, this thread might be helpful to you: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=35034&highlight=eotech
I myself am an Aimpoint guy; my Comp M2 has the same battery in it from Iraq in 2004.

Contact EoTech themselves, as they will install the new battery contacts for free, all you have to do is ship it to them and they will do this, as well as give you the allen wrench attachment piece if you don't already have it. I never had a problem with mine, but I sent mine in anyways, as I had to get a new mount for my EoTech Magnifier(bought it knowing the mount had to be replaced, cheaper price, and the mount was exchanged for a brand new one. But now I wish I had just bought a larue mount for both instead lol)
