I've been studying World War 2 since I was really young, and this (seemingly) simple fact has evaded me, but I never really thought of it until now. What is meant by the "Third Reich".. why Third?

The First Reich was the lands ruled by Charlemagne in a continuation of the (Western) Roman Empire. Also commonly refered to as "The Holy Roman Empire".

The Second Reich was in the 1800s with the unification of the various German states in the German Confederation under Prussian control.

The Third Reich...well....

There were two other "Reichs" that the Nazis wanted to be like before it, though which two they were depends on who you ask. Most agree the first was the Romans, but some take the second to be the Byzantines (Eastern/Later Romans, in Byzantium/Constantinople/modern-day Istanbul) while others take the second to be the Holy Roman Empire or one of the other Dark Ages/Medieval Times empires.

The ironic thing is that the Italian fascists also were trying to "restore Rome's former glory."

Edit: See what I mean about different people saying different Reichs? Take your pick.

Hope this helps bud. Have a good one, and just some thoughts...
