DURBAN: Ashes of India’s independence hero Mahatma Gandhi, kept for decades by a family friend after his assassination, were scattered Saturday off South Africa’s coast, his family said.

“About 200 people attended. Everything went well, it was a beautiful ceremony,” said Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of the apostle of non-violence.

An AFP photographer said the pre-dawn ceremony was “dignified”.

“Before the immersion took place, the Hindu priest recited hymns. Gandhi’s great grandson poured the ashes into the sea and afterwards people threw flowers as a sign of their final goodbyes,” he said.
A radical nationalist shot Gandhi on January 30, 1948 in India, just months after he led the country to independence from Britain. He was cremated according to Hindu custom.

Normally, ashes are immersed in rivers or the sea within days, but Gandhi’s ashes were divided and put in several urns and sent around India and across the globe so his followers could hold memorials.
One urn came to South Africa, where Gandhi had come to practise law in 1893, living in the country on and off for 21 years.

A family friend, Vilas Mehta, helped with the arrangements for the prayers, and the ashes were immersed after 10 days, according to the Gandhi Development Trust in Durban.

Unknown to the family, Mehta kept a few remnants of the ashes, and guarded them in secret for the rest of her life, the Trust said.

She “decided to take a little bit of the ashes and keep it in safekeeping as a memento of that occasion, not realizing that it is our custom to immerse them,” said Gandhi.

When Mehta passed on, her daughter-in-law decided to return them to the Gandhi family.

Right.

Edit: Most of his ashes were immersed at the Sangam at Allahabad on 12 February 1948.

To correct you, Gandhi studied in India and England. He used to practice law in SA, but never studied there.

True that both Gandhi and Jinnah supported the Turkish Independence movement but that that is where the similarities end.

Gandhi came from a merchant family and during the Indian Independence movement he was jailed 4 times by the colonial rulers. Jinnah on the other hand was born in an autocratic family and he had the good fortune of never being jailed by the colonial rulers.

Gandhi wanted India to be one country whereas Jinnah wanted a different homeland for the Muslims of India. Gandhi went on fasts a number of times against anti-Muslim riots but Jinnah never did.

When India and Pakistan became independence Gandhi never took a seat in the Government and advocated the disbanding of the Indian National Congress as its purpose i.e. independence of India was achieved. Jinnah on the other hand after independence became the Governor General of Pakistan, he retained the Presidency of the Muslim League, the only political party in Pakistan and he was also President of the Constituent Assembly, the lawmaking body of Pakistan.

Jinnah's grandson is one of the biggest Industrialist in India (yes India not Pakistan)

Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu radical.

Do I need to say more?

AFAIK he wanted dominion status only after the bravery acts of Bhagat Singh,Netaji and others who wanted nothing but independence that congress started following suit btw the independence struggle was not entirely on Gandhi kindly remember people like Sukhdev,Bhagat Singh,Netaji,Chandrashekhar Azad also contributed.

it is not convenient to overlook the freedom fighters the real hero of independence.

In the real world where your enemy is on a rampage all this peace loving and meditation thing is good only to listen.
KINDLY REMEMBER why NATHURAM GODSE decided to kill him.Gandhi was forcing the indian govt to pay Pakistan some 20crores i think while the military campaign in Kashmir already started.

This is not a thread about India's freedom struggle. I was only responding to a poster who was putting Gandhi and Jinnah in the same bracket. I was only trying to point out the differences between these two individuals.

Ok I know my history and the people that you have mentioned in your mail but that is a different topic. Isnt it?

Again you are missing the point here. Its about the comparison between Gandhi and Jinnah. And not about singing Gandhi's praises. And everyone on this site has the right to post their views right. Hating someone is OK but trying to make everybody hate the same is not right. Let people form their own opinions.

Get a beer now!
