Just a quick question for anyone who has ever used the M203, how useful/accurate is the leaf sight? I noticed on a several pictures that some grenadiers put their PAQ4/PEQ2 on the 12 o'clock rail instead of the leaf sight, is it useless? What' s the alternative method for aiming? TLAR? (That Looks About Right)

Also, I read the PAQ4 was not used anymore by US SOF, who favor the larger PEQ2. Is there any significant advantage over the PAQ4, other than the IR illuminator?

Much thanks.

M203 - I am not familiar with the photo of which you speak. Some may use the quadrant sight - most people I know use the leaf w/ky windage.

PEQ2 offers seperate aiming narrow and wide illuminating beams, the illuminating beam can be narrow or wide like an IR flashlight. It also has increased aiming/pointer beam range. It works well with integrated pressure switch. PAQ4 = decreased range, on / off / toggle w/pressure aim point.

Thanks stoli! :)

I meant pics like these:

The PEQ2 looks huge, it fills a whole portion of the rail.

That second photo is the older style M203 as well (longer).

I think the question was asked on here before, with enough practice you can actually guestimate the elevation for it.

Personally i dont get that many training rounds though. ;)

The shorter 9" M203 is officially the M203A1. The longer 12" is still the M203. The 12" M203 is still in service. US Army fireteams are generally one M249, two M16s, and a M16 with a 12" M203. The M203A1 is for use with M4s.

When I was a 203 gunner, back in the day,
I personally felt the leaf sights and/or the quad sites,
were very accurate, during the day.
At night was another story....

yeah, you can cook an egg by pointing the peq2 illuminator at it. i'm serious.

Thanks for all the input! :D

Cook an egg? Funny, I just finished reading "Generation Kill" (about First Recon in Iraq) and at some point, one of them is observing a berm at night, and feels heat on his face, like a ray of sun hitting straight on him. Turns out another Marine was looking at him through his PVS17 and was pointing his PEQ2-equipped M4 straight at his head...

PEQ has illuminator and designator. it is more powerful which can be used to designate target for aircraft. I have seen a PEQ2 mounted on a MRP made shots using the NVG to 500 yards.

Some do use the leaf sight and mount the PEQ2 on the 3 or 9 o'clock rail.
