Why not? I met an ANG F-16 pilot at an airshow who called it that. :)

Are you an F-16 pilot? No? Then I'd defer to the guys who actually fly the jet and call it what they do...

No, I don't fly F-16's but that plane is a Falcon, not a Viper.

Mighty emphatic. Why don't you tell all those F-16 pilots out there that they're calling their airplane by the wrong name. Or send an email to Lockmart to stop referring to it as "the Viper" in their quarterly mag.
Do you call the A-10 the "Thunderbolt II?"

Well the A-10 is a Thunderbolt II, not a Warthog, so by your own logic that the Viper is a Falcon (It should be Fighting Falcon, and not just Falcon), then you must also call the A-10 by its proper name. You really made yourself look like a fool with those two posts. As DLodge said, go tell -16 drivers that they are calling their mount by the wrong name, I would LOVE to see that. I'll make sure to call a family friend who is a Lt. Col. in the AF who has flown F-15E's, F-111F's, and F-16C's and you two can have a little chat about how he is WRONG. Ugh, some people.

Actually I think most F-16 pilots don't give a damn, what we think their plane is called. The "I dare you to say it to their face" stuff is silly.

I totally agree, most pilots wouldn't care. BadKarma26, on the other hand, was greatly distressed when I referred to the Fighting Falcon as a "Viper."

I'm not distressed, its just a dumb name thats all. Stop making assumptions.

And who cares about your "family friend" who is a LTC. My boss where I work is a retired Major General who flew KC-135s and A-10s. He thinks that the AF switching the name to "Viper" is retarded as well.

The AF hasn't switched to VIper. Viper was wthe name that came up at Lockheed during building/testing...the AF renamed it to Fighting Falcon which is still the official name today.
