Dr.Bishop is unlikely to face execution. Our justice system tends to deal with murderesses with comparative leniency; obviously juries can more easily be swayed to sympathize with a woman. Often, they are merely imprisoned for crimes that a man would be put to death for. I probably shouldn't say "merely", as incarceration is no small thing, and in any case she's not going to have an easy time of it in prison (or in a mental hospital - what else can her defense team do, but try an insanity defense?) as she probably won't have much in common with the other inmates.
May Dr. Bishop's three victims rest in peace.

I understand the snapping part however it does take a lot of patience to get through to university. Especially professors and teachers. Not every one can teach. Most teachers are calm and composed otherwise they can not handle difficult students.
That is my real world and in a real world a professor does not pull a gun on other people.

Yes. It very much do. If they own a handgun.
She went ballistic over being denied tenure? She must've crazy in the first place. Most people would have a good cry and move on. Not shoot their colleagues. Good grief, there must be more to this story.

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- One person is in critical condition tonight and two people have been upgraded to stable after a deadly shooting at UAH.
G.K. Podila, Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson, all three faculty members at the university, died shortly after the afternoon shooting at the Shelby Center.
Joseph Leahy is in critical condition at Huntsville Hospital. Stephanie Monticello and Luis Rogelio Cruz-Vera are now stable, officials said.
Apparently she had a future ahead of her, but decided to murder innocent people instead.
Bishop is quoted in the story as co-inventor of "InQ," a new cell growth incubator which promised to cut the costs, size and maintenance involved in the mechanics of cell generation.

Might be a good reason why they denied her? academia's well known for being a place where the more eccentric type can develop their oddness into an artform away from the interference of the real world and mostly its harmless, its also somewhere you can get into developing grudges based on nothing but personalities and opinion and turn them into the sort of conflict that would make the Hatfields and McCoys wince, add a healthy dose of people who believe in their own intellectual superiority way beyond their actual talents and you can get some very poisonous situations.

Well it's great to get rid of tenure if the professor stinks and never publishes anything. But it's worthwhile to keep for those who do research, publish and have positive comments from students.
I can think of a number of profs who definately deserved their tenure and a handful that should've been fired let alone be given tenure.
All the shootings at my father's university were from Chinese grad students (most in either Chem or Biochem) who upon failing a class shot their professor. Another blew his brains out instead of killing his major professor. 2 major buildings devoted to the physical sciences were named after dead profs.

I had to look up what tenured mean as in Australia and in Europe that is not the practice. There is no lifelong professor position.

Crazy is gender-neutral. So are firearms. Women are just as capable of blind rage and violence, they just traditionally don't get the cultural 'permission' to explore it -- but the more the media creams over ratings when people go Postal, the more wide-spread this kind of stuff will become.
Anyhow -- I don't care if she was crudely harassed and tenure denied on the flip of a two-tailed coin -- don't start trying to explain away cold-blooded murder. Her research looks tight so it suggests she was identified as a wacko and may have been denied tenure on teaching or departmental discomfort. It looks like most of the people she went after were older, established professors, so could be payback.
Hmmm... if the crazy Major Nidal had been bounced out at Walter Reed as he should have been instead of shifted to Ft. Hood, perhaps he would he have taken out his 'persecutors' among faculty and colleagues. Wonder if any of them thought about that and passed the buck?

All that work, all those nights cramming, all the anxiety for the comps............................and you flip out and kill two human beings who also went through the grad school ringer to get their Masters and PhDs. All just a waste.
No wonder my father said "good riddance" after 49 years of inter departmental squabbling and wrangling. He was offered the chairmanship of his department a few times. He said no way. No wonder.

People are the same, it doesn't matter what they do. You see them carry themselves in only a small part of their lives.
But, me, I would have guessed it be the one so typical of this type of situation. The "angry white male".

RIP to the dead. Amazing to me that evidently this woman was a Ph.D and graduated from Harvard or some Ivy league school........and still was unbalanced enough to do such a deed. I think sometimes that we (in the USA) need some courses in school on subjects like "being centered" and understanding the big picture, life, and your place in society. Her loosing it to the extent she somehow percieved she was justified in killing people because she did not get tenure....is so absurd....shows she did not get the big picture.

Amy Bishop was never charged in her brother's death, Police Chief Paul Frazier said.
Police records detailing the 1986 incident are missing, and a log of the incident lists it as an accidental shooting, he said.
An officer involved in the case told him that Anderson shot her brother after an argument, Chief Frazier said.
Bishop has been charged with capital murder after the shooting at University of Alabama in Huntsville, which means she could face the death penalty if convicted.
A man, thought to be Bishop's husband, is also in custody.
Huntsville police chief Henry Reyes said Bishop, 45, was attending a faculty meeting on the third floor of the sciences building on Friday afternoon when she shot six colleagues, killing three.
Bishop, a lecturer and researcher at the university, was arrested as she was leaving the building.
Police said a 9 mm handgun was recovered from the second floor of the building.
Bishop, a Harvard-educated neurobiologist who became an assistant professor at the school in 2003, was taken in handcuffs to the county jail.
As she got into a police car, she said, "It didn't happen. There's no way. ... They are still alive."
