Hey... got a question from a friend off another forum....

Navy Rifle Qualifications 1950 im not sure if this is where to post but i couldnt find any other forum to use...

my dad reported to NTCGL in january 1951. he went on to become a boiler tech 3rd class and separated in january 1955...

he just recently sent to the repository for all of his records and it showed a "shooting rating" of 299...

does anyone know what that means or what the Navy quals were 60yrs ago?

thanks

So what did a rating of 299 mean????

Thanks

When my dad went through navy basic in 1980, he said they had him shoot an M1911 a few times and that that was all the shooting they did. apparently he never touched a rifle throughout basic, so I guess it all depends when you went. my friends who went Navy all did M-16A2 quals. currently a max score is 200. 170 nets you expert, 160-169 sharpshooter, and 140-159 marksman. they switched the scores in 1959 and I cant find the previous scoring system, but I would guess it was out of 350 or 400 unless your dad was just that good of a shot. a 299 out of 300 would mean that if he was shooting on a 10 bull target, where a 10 is a bullseye and each ring outside is one point less, he hit the bull with every shot except for one which was a 9. I'm army, so we do our quals a bit differently, but I find a 299 out of 300 to be hard to believe, hence why I think it might have been 350 or 400 then.
