File photograph taken during practice flight on July 30, 2003, showing Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner during freefall across the English Channel between Dover and Calais. On July 31, 2003, Baumgartner jumped out of a plane at 9,000 metres (29,500ft) above Dover in southern England, wearing only an aerodynamic jumpsuit with a 6ft (1.8m) carbon fin strapped to his back, oxygen to breathe, and a parachute to land, and landed safely in Calais after an eight-minute flight, becoming the first person to skydive across the English Channel. Ever heard of HALO?

I've read increasing comments from spec-ops tell alls (no, not McNabb) describing HALO insertions as now rare. Low-level helicopter infil becoming more prevalent.

But yeah, with a tail wind one of those Ram-Air chutes is supposedly capable of nominal altitude loss and miles of directed cruising.

I read 40 miles at best using Ram-Air HAHO techniques. It does get pretty cold though.

HALO jumbers are not able to reach those kind of distances without aid of an air-foil. 'Webbed' jump suits don't help that much, ie 30+ miles. Thus the military application for HALO jumps using a composite wing for speed and distance....

haha. I was unimpressed with red bull. I was the only one left awake after being up for 40 straight hours and had to drive for about 4 hours to get us home. About half way there I got a whole bunch of red bull's from a gas station and chugged them continuously for the next 1.5 hours. It didn't seem to do anything for keeping me awake and I had to resort to self face slapping. I was red as a beet by the time we arrived.

Actually when you pass your threshold of caffein intake, the more caffein you take would make you sleepy.

Still the best method in my humble opinion, pain is your friend

Shoulda poured cold water (or Red Bull) down the back of your neck--works for me. Of course, you get immune to even that after a while...

That wing should have machine guns and rockets mounted on it.

Maybe the next time James Bond needs to fly....it will ;)

Well, I think this is very interesting way of delivering SF soldiers to some places... It combines the speed of HALO flight and the range of HAHO... At least, one should try this.
