Terrorists have threatened both the Democratic and Republican conventions in Boston and New York. Should the military be utilized to provide security at the conventions?

No, we couldn't get that lucky. If we protect W we'll have to protect Kerry. It would be a waste. I am only kidding. Sure, if we have a credible threat, why not? If we have a threat and we don't then some yahoo senator will skewer W for not being clairvoyant and being able to step into the future and stop the needle in the haystack.

We have what, 150,000 men in Iraq? Probably not even. Our active duty Army is over 500,000-strong and there are also something like 125,000 active duty Marines. Keep in mind that the reserves and National Guard add quite a bit of manpower on top of that.

Are you kidding me? We don't deploy everybody all at once to Iraq, but instead we rotate them. We still have the 82nd, 101st and 3rd ID back in the state and i'm pretty sure 3 divisions are more than enough to protect this convention.

The Army isn't exactly in the most flexible situation. The 3rd ID has an element in Africa. The 101st is re-deploying a brigade. I'll be surprised if the 82nd didn't have guys somewhere out there. You have approx. 1000 pulling MFO duty in the Mid-East, about 175,000 in Iraq, 10,000 in Afghanistan, 32,000 in Korea, Kosovo still has thousands of troops there...etc.

Let the guys in suits handle this one. Granted, the military will obviously provide security in the air...Do you really want an Army division sitting in Humvees outside the convention???
