111207 "Implode' IRS Offices"

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) told a crowd at CPAC on Saturday that he could "empathize" with the suicide bomber who last week attacked an IRS office in Austin (http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/crash_pilot_wrote_anti-irs_anti-corporate_screed.php), and encouraged his listeners to "implode" other IRS offices, according to a witness.
King's comments weren't recorded, but a staffer for Media Matters, who heard the comments, provided TPMmuckraker with an account.
The staffer, who requested anonymity because she's not a communications specialist, said that King, an extreme right-winger with a reputation for eyebrow-raising rhetoric, appeared as a surprise guest speaker on an immigration panel at the conservative conference. During his closing remarks, King veered into a complaint about high taxes, and said he could "empathize" with the man who flew a plane into an IRS building last week.
During the question and answer session, the Media Matters staffer asked King to clarify his comment, reminding him of his sworn duty to protect the American people from all sworn enemies, foreign and domestic. In response, said the staffer, King gave a long and convoluted answer about having been personally audited by the IRS, and ended
by saying he intended to hold a fundraiser to help people "implode" their local IRS office.
We've told you about other (http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/babbin-jokes-about-norquist-im-glad-he-didnt-fly-that-plane-into-an-irs-building.php) inappropriate (http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/stacks_daughter_my_dad_was_a_hero_for_standing_up.php) responses to the bombing, which was carried out by Austin software developer Joe Stack, and in which one other person has so far died. But King's may take the cake.
King's office did not immediately comment on the account.http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/steve-king-to-conservatives-implode-irs-offices.php

They find out who she is, she is utterly totally absolutely screwed. They will strip her of anything of value and leave her career in the gutter.

If he said that...he should stand responsibility for it...if not, it's crap.

That said, what do people do when their government and the tax collectors run amok? What power do the people have when the single most important agency of their government attacks them with all the power of the government...we have absolutely no power to stop them, even if they have made a mistake...and believe me, they make plenty of them. There is no accounting for the vast number of Americans who are made destitute eveyr year by our tax enforcers....and a great many are wrongfully assaulted. Few have the resources to fight them. Yet, our elected reps seem powerless to have any influence in holding these attack dogs back.

I have known four people in my life who were entangled with IRS...some deserved their nightmare because they really were cheating...but, one was dogged into homelessness totally wrongfully...why? When the mistake was discovered, the IRS did not apologize or even attempt to right the wrong...the poor guy did not even have enough money to hire an attorney to help him get his life back from the bastrds. All he could do was start over...how do you deal with your feelings after that?

Desperate people do desperate things....and the IRS often...not always, but often.... has to just get the brunt of that hopeless, helpless fury.

"Overheard" by a Media Matters staffer? Well, I'm convinced.

I overheard Macs is secretly some sort of Demi-God. True story..see i can do it too. I should be a journalist!

Unless it's been recorded she's full of it. When she gets caught she'll realize how stupid of a move this was. Though when you think about it heads will roll no matter what happens or was actually.

The whole point is that the IRS will destroy innocent lives in the course of pursuit tax cases against people even if the IRS is wrong, it is like if the death row and court system is questioned, it would open the flood gates to challenge every case in IRS (also parts of the legal system) history ..they see it as in the long run it's better to kill a few innocents than let millions challenge their authority, such a challenge to authority could very well plunge the US into real internal strife (possible civil war.. very remote chance)

Doesn't sound much different than things spoken like the other party when they were in the minority. How soon they forget.

This story sounds like crap IMHO, would it be a wise political move to have your countrymen "imploding" the IRS buildings across the states when in office? It would be as politically acceptable as paying the government back taxes via just walking into a Bank of America office and handing them money and your tax slip.

Also what is the deal with the IRS that makes everyone so mad? I don't get it?

I can keep all my tax papers in order and file every year and never been audited, its part of being a working adult and is expected of everyone is it not? I do live in Canada, but I am trying to see why everyone dislikes those guys so much.

You live in Canada, have probably never dealt with US government employees. I have dealt with many employees of one federal program, and let me tell you, they are some of the most boneheaded ignorant anuses that walk the planet. I used to give them the benefit of the doubt, thought it was just a few bad apples, but after being in contact with many many different ones over various geographical locations, it is an agency wide culture. And it couldn't possibly be limited to just one federal branch. After being in contact with other federalized employees of the TSA of which I have unfortunately had to deal with thousands of times since its inception really drives the point home. Abusiveness and general asshatery from federal employees is pretty much government wide. Of course there probalby are like 5% or less that are actually earning their paycheck, the other 95% can eat a **** for all I care. And if people began to rise up against them, I will admit, I couldn't care less.

Being audited by the IRS is worse than rape. I get the whole paying taxes and contributing to society deal; it is necessary. But, it is easy to see how situations like this can drive people mad. I mean after all, it was motivation enough for our founders to start a revolution.

Sounds pretty bad. Usually when I go to deal with my government they will want my SIN # and address, and photo ID from there they can bring up my information on computer and can be handled quickly if your at the right building and have your paper work in order. Hell I can even make them speak french if I feel like it :)

Could be either one or two things that your facing with when your dealing with them. A: They are at such a low level and can do sweet f*ck all to really help you in the first place besides hand you/take forms or, B: Top down micromanaged. Combination's of both in the are dangerous in either the corporate / government sector.

C'mon, chances are he said it. Politicians will tell their audiences whatever they want to hear to get approval. I do love it when our elected representatives, the people who make the laws, the ones who control the government and suck off lobbyists act as if they're powerless to fix things and doggone it they're angry at government just like you and me. It's beyond absurd.

Not sure if this is the straight dope (can't open blog/you tube at work) but this says it has video of the remarks....

Let me know if it helps or not--no "major" sites seem to have picked it up yet, just the 'usual suspects (democratic underground, daily kos, huffington..)

http://beltwayblips.dailyradar.com/video/gop-rep-steve-king-justifies-suicide-attack-on-irs/Nowhere in that segment does he advocate or approve of what Stack did. He called for the Abolishment of the IRS via laws and replacing it with a National Sales tax. If this is all Media Matters has they shot themselves in the foot.

Nicely said and I’d like to add the media matters puts out its own fair share of manipulative propaganda, hype and FUD based on all the times I’ve witnessed its goons creatively edit sound bites, video and written statements. These crooks (all of them) are the embodiment of “A lie said enough times can become truth”.

So much of the sh*t we’re in can all be blamed on people casting aside honesty and integrity in favor of personal gain.
