Port Elizabeth - Three boys, aged 14, 15 and 16, were found guilty of the murder of five-year-old Rayno Ruiters, of Port Alfred, in the Eastern Cape High Court on Monday.
Suspect number one, 16, was also found guilty of rape and sodomy.
The boys, who all denied guilt, raped and murdered Rayno on November 17 2008.
They were on their way to pick wild fruit in a forest near Protea street in Station Hill, Port Alfred, when they asked Rayno to join them.
Kicked, trampled, burned
Judge Glen Goossen read the description of the attack. The boy was left for dead and his body was only discovered the next day.
The boys hit Rayno over the head with a rock when he refused to take off his clothes. They took off his pants. He was then raped.
He was burned with a cigarette over his whole body, and his attackers also kicked and tramped on him.
During the attack, suspect number one asked suspects two, 15, and three, 14, to hold Rayno's arms and keep him quiet. Suspect one then disappeared, only to return 20 minutes later with a beer bottle filled with boiling water.
The post-mortem on November 19 2008 found that he poured boiling water over Rayno's face and body,
Died of wounds
Stuart Dwyer, who conducted the post-mortem, testified that Rayno did not die immediately after his assault and rape, but that he was conscious and aware of the pain until he eventually died of his wounds.
The T-shirt suspect number one had been wearing on the day of the incident was covered in Rayno's blood.
A 10-year-old witness testified against the suspects.
"His testimony was accurate and was consistent with that in his statement - which was not the case with the suspects' testimony," said Goossen.
After the judge had delivered his verdict, prosecutor Glenn Turner asked that a psychologist and social worker compile reports in mitigation of sentencing for each of the boys.
