The Venezuelan and Colombian presidents traded insults at a summit with Hugo Chavez telling Alvaro Uribe to 'Go to hell!' after he was called a 'coward'.

President Hugo Chavez nearly stormed out of the summit on Monday during a shouting match with his Colombian counterpart.
The clash took place during a private meeting of heads of state, on the sidelines of a two-day summit of Latin American and Caribbean nations in Cancun, Mexico, a Colombian diplomat told the AFP news agency.

Mr Uribe complained to Mr Chavez about a trade embargo Venezuela has imposed on Colombia, upsetting the Venezuelan president and further exacerbating their falling out ever since Bogota signed a military base agreement with the US last year.
Mr Chavez then accused Mr Uribe of planning his assassination by a paramilitary squad and threatened to walk out of the summit in disgust.
"An angry Uribe then shouted: 'Be a man! These issues are meant to be discussed in these venues. You're brave speaking at a distance, but a coward when it comes to talking face to face'," the diplomat said.
Mr Chavez is reported to have replied: "Go to hell!"
President Felipe Calderon of Mexico then attempted to reconcile the pair of fuming leaders, according to the diplomat.
Mr Calderon said later that Venezuela and Colombia must settle their differences in "respectful dialogue ... to avoid accusations and recriminations".
His spokesman, Max Cortazar, confirmed the Uribe-Chavez altercation.
"There was a hot exchange of views, but without getting down to insults," Mr Cortazar insisted.
In a broadcast on Venezuelan televison and radio this week, Mr Chavez demanded Britain hand over the Falkland Islands to Argentina in a direct appeal to the Queen. (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/nilegardiner/100027019/hugo-chavez-would-make-a-perfect-court-jester/)

Mr Chavez is reported to have replied: "There is sand in my Vag!"

I heard a slightly different version...

Oh, to have been a person in the room and to laugh out loud at Hugo...He is a huge blowhard and deserved the name "Coward"...I have now the greatest respect for Mr. Uribe. How typical of Chavez to toss in 'You're planning to have me assassinated' bull s4it to change the subject and refocus the discussion and put Uribe on the defensive...a very common tactic of commies well used at the Korean talks....but, uribe did not take the bait and continued his track, giving Hugo a personal insult that clearly demonstrated Uribe is not afraid of this common thug and has very little respect for him (to publicly call a Latino a coward is an ultimate insult....Mr. Uribe could not have chosen his words better)

Chavez must have almost had a heart seizure.

I love the Latin American summit. Hugo Chavez gets told on how big of a tool he is, every time.

I heard a slightly different version...

I think he didn't call him a coward:

"Sea varón, quédese aquí, porque a veces usted insulta en la distancia, pero cuando estamos cara a cara no hablamos”.

Be a man, stay here, because sometimes you insult at the distance, but when we are face to face you don't talk.

Apologies if I am making a mistake on the translation.

OK, but what's with the sand? I don't understand the idiom.

Presumably the sand would be rather irritating and annoying, and the persons mood would reflect that.

I take it then that "Mr Chavez is reported to have replied: "There is sand in my Vag!"" is not a real quote but some joke added by Seraosha. Ok, I get it then.

Sorry to get to this late and not explain my joke for you miguel, but our good fellow members have already.
But that was pretty funny asking what a vag was and it's relation to sand, you have to admit.

That sure would take a lot of sand.

Yeah, with hindsight, it is. I guess these things inevitably happen when English is not your first language.

Listen every time a guy like Uribe or Chavez opens his rude box to speak in LatAm you can see how coward and vain they are. It's even worse than Italian bella figura, it's gratis trashtalking and bollocks. They're the main cause of the state of LatAm right now (without even taking into acccount the US involvment).

Your translation looks good to me, I don't see the usage of the word coward. It was definitely more an implied thing than a straight out declaration.

Why the hell does Chavez even care about the Falkland Islands? What's next; is Chavez going to tell us to grant independence to Puerto Rico, or else?

Well, the joke is worthless now....if you don't get it, you spoil it by asking for an explanation....it's one of those spontaneous thingies. You just would have to get it on the first go around.

I got it...and thought it mildly amusing. I smiled...and thought it was quite appropriate for the situation Hugo was in.

Well, sadly, the moment has passed.
