I got this panzerfaust today, the tube is still in great shape, but the head has become rather weak and fragile.
I was considering a full restoration, or maybe just partially, do prevent further damage.
Since this is my first time any ideas, or information would be most welcome, thank you.

Usually it isn't a good idea to mess around with unexploded ordnance.......ever.

- Make sure that a professional checks this out and confirms there´ll be no risks at all and that it´s safe to handle. That´s a gun, and with guns SAFETY FIRST, ALWAYS.
- I´d strongly suggest you to ask for qualified advice to restore it. You´ve got a piece of history there, and it would be sad if it´s lost due to inappropriate handling.
- Good luck !

The gun isn't so bad, that head is a pretty substantial hollow charge warhead!
I hope it was disarmed.

Hit it on the head with a hammer.

You need to drill the contact fuse out of the head. the fuse is threaded and the act of drilling into it will either destroy it, or effectively back the fuse out of its recess.
A dremel and some sulphates would probably get the worst of the rust off.

- this advice is given on the understanding you are not worthy of breeding if you actually disassemble weapons systems on your kitchen table.

The explosive is gone. it would have been behind the internal cone in that hollow space.

Explosives have been removed, it was found near Lommel, Belgium, there was a short fight there in 1944, The British lost 90 men, the Germans lost 130-150 of their paratroopers, 36 civilians were executed. The Jagdpanther that can be seen in the Imperial war museum came from this battle.
I did not dig it up, but the guy who did removed the explosives himself, he disarms things like handgrenades and panzerfausts himself, he has been doing this for 4 years and he has been lucky so far, but there are actually a lot of people in Belgium who do this, I know a few people in The Bulge who collect unexploded ordnance.

This Panzerfaust is 99% safe, so I'm asking again does anyone know where I can find information about how to preserve it?

Only thing I can think of is to clean the top layer of rust off using a solvent* and wire brush. after carefully removing the loose layer of rust rinse with solvent (*Thinner, Acetone, etc.) again and air dry. Finally coat with clear lacquer or Microcystalline wax.(this assumes your not trying to restore to factory new condidtion).

Has the warhead been separated from the launch tube and checked to ensure the booster has in fact been removed(Seperate charge from the warhead obviously). If it hasnt, contact the authorities, only reason I say this is your mentioning an Amatuer made it Inert.

Explosives have been removed

Ok, I missunderstood, but I have no working knowledge of how a panzerfaust works. Good find though, good luck restoring it some and hopefully you will post pictures of your progress with it.

Once all security actions have being taken:

- linedoggie gave you a good advice; I´d only point that you must be carefull while removing rust / adding coats of any product; since metal may´ve become thiner and fragile due to rust. Literally, "handle with care !".

Well, the Booster charge was originally Black Powder so it should have deteriorated long ago, considering the condition of the Launcher. IIRC some years ago a WWI Minenwerfer in a UK museum went off when being moved. It had been on display for years with a Live Practice round

The ignition charge of the panzerfaust 30 had to be added manually before firing it, most of the time german soldiers normally waited untill it was really necessary to arm it, because of the high percentage of accidents with these early models.
the major problem is to preserve the thin back of the head.
I removed a small piece of rust today, and strange enough I discovered that there is still paint underneath !?! This could become interesting.
