I've been reading these forums for a few months now, and I figured that there was no better way to stop lurking than to post some pictures of some of my units (and my own) experiences in Iraq. so... without hesitation, let me introduce you to a few of the things we did...

we went on patrols...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/Patrol.jpg

we blew sh*t up...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/EOD.jpg

it got foggy...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/fog.jpg

it got cold...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/cold.jpg

it rained...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/lake1.jpg
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/lake2.jpg
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/lake3.jpg

and it caused problems...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/Water.jpg

we had Christmas festivities...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/xmas.jpg

There were good times...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/Goodtimes1.jpg
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/Goodtimes2.jpg

And there were bad times...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/Badtimes1.jpg
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/Badtimes2.jpg

There were dogs...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/dog.jpg

And of course... the children...
http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/children.jpg

Enjoy :D

Fozzie - nah, thats either just mud or an oil/grease caked on the side. not really sure how it got there but considering the fact our motor pool was about a foot deep mud/slush puddle, there are waaayy too many ways it could have gotten there.

Midav - yes, I am with 4ID. We were in a different AO than most of 4ID as we were attached to a different division, but it all worked out pretty well.

some other random notes... the guy in the santa hat was one of our local contractors (irony at its finest!), working as an interpreter. he was pretty cool - helped us out a lot. last I had heard, he had stayed on with our replacement unit.

that humvee in the """puddle""" literally had its frame resting on the bottom, and required a tracked vehicle to pull it out (we tried using two other humvee's, but they couldn't get enough traction in the mud).

yes, thats a big slingshot. you have to love medics. :D

hmmm, i'll post more tomorrow when i get a chance to sort through them again... glad you all enjoyed them so far :)

oh... parting thought... does this bring a grin to anyone else's face?

Yeah that’s funny. Did it taste the same? And do you mind telling everyone a little about your MOS and what you experienced in Iraq? It’s always good to get the input from someone that was there.

Nice shot of the Coke can...reminds me of "Kufa Cola" we had down near Najaf. Wish I had snapped a shot of that... I never trusted Muqtada "Monkey Boy" Sadr enough to drink his damn soda though. One bad experience with a goat swaarma was enough.

Publicly announced reasons for invading Iraq:

1) WMD

2) get rid of Saddam and his cronies

Real reasons:

1) war on terror -- we need to exert pressure by surrounding terrorist-supporting states Iran and Syria (and Saudi Arabia). Turkey, Jordan, Israel and Afghanistan complete this encirclement.

2) oil -- we need to guarantee free oil trade because we are getting kicked out of Saudi Arabia. Iraq fits this goal.

3) democracy experiment -- take a backwards country and show them the fruits of freedom and free elections. key word is experiment.

I'm afraid these points will only fall on deaf ears, most who hate our President have no mind compacity to understand that the changes in Iraq will better the future of not only the Iraqis but also the world. p-)

I hate to disappoint, but I am not an officer - as a PFC, I am rather far from it. You did, however, bring a smile to my face. :D

@Dennis G - I'm just a dismounted 11B (Infantry) that was trying to do my best in a rapidly changing environment. Some days we were kicking in doors, some days we we're escorting our CO to town council meetings. some days were spent cleaning up after our cooks and sitting on guard. Never had two identical days though. :)

@shrek - *nod* - kinda at a loss of words, since I know you have BTDT and know it just as well as anyone. Truer words have never been spoken.

and... since people keep asking... onto the slideshow....

us stopping traffic... in the first picture it is because we had a Bradley hit by an IED behind the camera, and we were in the process of recovering it and arresting people, whereas in the second picture its was so that they would not be hit by falling shrapnel from the second EOD picture above... anyone who can ID the weapon in the first picture gets a cookie!

http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/2/roadblock2.jpg

random scenery... the first is a sunset behind the near-by oil refinery, and the second is a mosque - not quite sure which one, it was not inside our AO...

http://dghost.net/images/milphotos/2/mosque.jpg

attempting to run up a wall in full combat load can be entertaining for a while...

From what I recall it was an American camp. It might have been posted in KPH for the benefit of contractors and possibly other coalition forces. Not positive though.

Isn't that one of the new M16A4s? How are those doin' out there?

Yup - its an A4. They are pretty much the same thing as the other M16/M4 rifles - keep them clean and they will treat you right. Only complaints I have had about the rifle is the carrying handle seems to slide a little (not too much, just enough to be annoying when trying to hit that 300m target) if not attached right, and the rail covers tend to go AWOL pretty easy. biggest problem i had personally is that CLP is sh*t when used in a dusty environment, and there is little interest in supplying us with anything else.

i could also rant a little about having to clear mud huts with an M16 when you have a hard time fitting through the 5' tall 2.5' wide doorway, but thats a different story...

Brad driver for now but that wont last long, we dont have Bradleys (new company) yea, the A4 (aka 'the musket') is a pain in the ass in MOUT. not as bad as a 249 but still. we're headed over in a few months. how was the rain over there? big old fat rain or itty bitty stingin rain? i'm a super private too, but hopefully i can get a sham shield b4 we head out. welcome home bro, have fun doing seemingly endless PMCSs :D

sadly, i was unable to eat the crackers in 2 minutes :D

I did get the opportunity to see two guys from 173rd "test" the SAPI plates in the IBA to see how well they can withstand a running jump-kick. on top of a hill. repeatedly. it was rather amusing at the time, wish I had gotten pictures.

yeah, when we got back I was reassigned as a Brad driver... life has been spent doing rediculous amounts of maintenance on a vehicle that was deployed for 11 months and deadlined every which way... it came back with several inches of dirt caked in the bottom of the engine compartment and they don't have any wash racks to use to clean them... so... after about 8 hours with a putty knife and an e-tool, it resembles "clean"... :cantbeli:

about the rain... the rain did both, although most of the times i remember it was the small stinging sort, especially when you are manning a gun on a humvee. I seem to remember the fat drops happening more at night and less frequently (maybe once a week? not too sure anymore - the days all kind of ran together). the rain itself never seemed too bad, it was always the mud that it created that was the PITA. or the foot deep puddles that were between your hooch and the latrine. but... the weather did seem to have a lot to do with what time of year (ie, it rains during the winter months but hardly in the summer) it was and where you were in the country. we were up north, near Kirkuk, and I know the weather up there was pretty different than further south.

anywho... glad you all like the pics :)
