Almost all Polish command and communication systems are named after flowers (i.e."Azalia"= azalea, "Szafran"= curcuma, "Storczyk"= orchid)

"Within NATO, Poland's performance has been the best of the three
new members. It has had the highest level of defense spending and it
has done the best at meeting its force goals. It provided significantly
more political and military support to the campaign in Kosovo than
did Hungary or the Czech Republic-even offering publicly to send
combat troops. It has also been willing to send troops for peacekeeping
missions abroad, not only in Europe but in areas such as Haiti,
Afghanistan, and Iraq.
First, Poland's performance reflects its desire to play a leading role in
Central Europe as well as within the Alliance over the longer run.
Over the next decade, Poland hopes to achieve a level of interoperability
with NATO similar to that of middleweight powers such as
Spain and Italy. While financial constraints may make this difficult,
its key strategic location could make Poland's influence in the
Alliance equal to, or even greater than, that of Spain and Italy.
Second, Poland has consciously sought to develop a strategic partnership
with the United States, building on the strong historical and
cultural ties that exist between the two countries as well as the strong
U.S. support for Poland's membership in NATO. In recent years,
Warsaw has emerged as Washington's strongest ally in Central
Europe. Unlike most European countries, Poland supported
President Bush's plans for missile defense and has indicated it is
willing to serve as a site for radars associated with the deployment of
a theater missile defense system for Central Europe. The decision to
purchase the F-16 instead of the British-Swedish Gripen or Frenchbuilt
Mirage also reflects Poland's desire to maintain a close strategic
partnership with the United States.
Poland's strong support for American policy during the Iraq crisis is
another indication of its desire to strengthen its strategic partnership
with Washington. Warsaw not only publicly backed the U.S.
intervention-a move that put it at odds with many West European
members of NATO, especially France and Germany-but also sent a
combat unit to Iraq. In addition, it agreed to take responsibility for
one of the three peacekeeping zones in Iraq after Saddam Hussein's
ouster.
Third, Poland has pursued an active Eastern policy-a move that has
been both encouraged and welcomed by Washington. Warsaw has
been a leading advocate of Ukraine's closer integration into Euro-
Atlantic structures and has pushed the EU to develop a more coherent
and flexible policy toward its Eastern neighbors, especially
Ukraine. Indeed, Poland's entry into the EU is likely to give the
EU's effort to develop an "Eastern dimention" new impetus.
Fourth, Poland has played an active role in promoting security in the
Baltic region. Relations with Lithuania, which were strained in the
early 1990s, have significantly improved and today are extremely
close. The two countries have created a joint peacekeeping battalion
(LITPOLBAT). Poland was one of the strongest supporters of Baltic
membership in NATO and has proposed expanding the German-
Danish-Polish Corps to include the Baltic states.
Several factors have contributed to this increasing self-confidence
and assertiveness on Poland's part. The first is Poland's entry into
NATO. Membership in the Alliance has given Poland the firm anchor
in the West it needed to be able to pursue an active Ostpolitik and
expand its regional role. Without it, Poland would have had more
difficulty in pursuing such an active Eastern policy.
The second is the strong backing of Washington. This, too, has significantly
increased Poland's security and self-confidence. It is no
accident that President Bush decided to give his major speech on
NATO enlargement in Warsaw (July 2001). It was a natural choice,
given the strong ties between Washington and Warsaw and the important
role that Poland played in pushing for an expansive second
round of NATO enlargement.
The third factor is the reconciliation with Germany discussed earlier,
which removed a substantial residual problem in Poland's relations
with the West and allowed Warsaw to turn its attention more forcefully
to the East. The Polish-German reconciliation has significantly
changed the geostrategic map of Central Europe, freeing Poland to
pursue an active policy in the East while allowing Germany to lay to
rest one of its most sensitive and painful historical legacies. Indeed,
reconciliation with Poland has been a cornerstone of Germany's
Ostpolitik since 1989."

I saw the pictures on the website already. I was looking for some new ones. I did see one in Airforces monthly a few months back, but have seen nothing new since then.
A few photos were published in "Raport" and "Nowa Technika Wojskowa" Polish magazines previous year. Have you seen them?

This one is interesting. Looks like SWD with new optics (SWD-M`s LD-6?). If SWD-M programme is over maybe replacing old PSO-1s with new scopes is a new way to deal with our SWD`s without "bigger" and "more expensive" modifications?

There is only few of them, and all in out Air Cavalery, there is not much improvement over stock SWD... except of that - the rest of our SWDs are damn old. For new rifles we need to wait until open of Sniper School...
For now we use SWDs (normal units), SWD-M (Air Cav.) and Sako TRG-21 (1st. Spec. and GROM)
Catch22

TRG 21 are now more in use in police than Army. Army bought some more 22 with 10 rnd box magazines. You can check our Polish Soldiers in Iraq - there are some 22's and no 21.

Well, for me it is not SWD-M. Note no bipod and old SWD style hand guard. I do not see the difference between old and Cegielski`s barrels, but for me on photo there is SWD with LD-6 only. Semi-modernisation?

ohh, I should add some comment-yes, its only presentation for India Defense Minister few days ago in Wesoła(near of Warsaw).
It was only presentation of new polish stuff like weapon(Kbw Sako, or WKW Wilk 12,7mm, GA40 grenade launcher 40mm etc.) and equipment(2 of those soldiers wearing new tactical vest from "MIWO" company, made in Poland ;) )
new tactic vests are from this company

All W-3 helicopter of Land Forces will be upgraded. The modernisation starts next year. The helos will have .50 guns in the nose mount (aiming by pilot's helmet sight), HUD display, new optics (laser/IR/TV camera), armoured floor and doors, NATO standard armament locks, self-defence system (flares, etc.) and some other stuff. Prototype will be ready next year.

Why western? When Poland was acceding to the NATO such equipment wasn' t yet standard issue in the old Nato countries, so they don't look western -they just look quite modern, due to the requirements of the modern battlefield and that's all.
But to tell you the truth, the majority of the polish army looks rather like this:

First, these guys are reservists, not regular army.
And can't agree with your statement. The 2001-2006 plan was a great leap for the army, of course there are some weak points (like lack of NVGs), but the typical soldier's gear is totally different than those used in early 1990s.
EDIT:
This is how typical soldier looks today:

yep I must agree, most soldiers have new equipment but on training old stuff is usen very often from simple reason... we have a lot of it and why throw it away when you can reasonably use it... this is usual in every army that for training you use oldest equipment and for fighting newest...
BTW we have such a big stock of weapons that 3 years ago AMW (military surplus agency) wanted to sell 10000!!! PPSH 1941 that were in their warehouses... can you imagine how many AK-47 TT's RAK's and other weapons we have... I heard that when we removed odl 85mm cannons from army there were enought ammo for them for 1 year of constant fire.....

we will modernize eventually, we can't demodernize (if thats even a word). The the way to go is up, and as the economy improves so will the amount of $$ we spend on military. By viture of living in the neighbourhood we do, we need a decent military to deter others. If not strong at least make them want to suffer enought to take the taste for a fight right out of thier mouths, just like Finland did in WW 2 to the Russians.

The thing is this, from what my father told me. When he was in the army, as soon as you got a pass for the weekend, you had to wear the dress/parade unifrom uniform.
When I was in Poland, most of the soldiers at train stations that were travelling for the pass, wore field uniforms. It makes it look quite ghetto. Honestly though, the parade uniforms haven't changed at all since the PRL, they're still the same colour, the only difference now, is that they were breaches and rogatywki.
Anyway, is it just me or is the officer on the left, in the photo of the two colonels and two brigadeier generals, whats up with his name tag. it looks more blueish then black, and is totally different then the other tags? anyone notice that.

As for Capoeira - it can surely be used offensive, but essentially it isn't a Martial Art per se. From my experience I wouldn't like to be a Capoeirista (Capo practicioner) confronted with some boxer, wrestler or someone trained in realistic combat.

One guy from my judo group has seen the army's judo and he said that their championships look completely different from normal ones. I've some question about this picture:
http://www.wso.wroc.pl/Aktualnosci/CBE_2005/C10_d.jpg
The corporals from this pictures are officer-cadets from Military Academy of the Army. In the past, in the Military Academy of the Infantry, only students from recon platoons were allowed to wear red paratrooper's berets. So, the question is: cadets from which branchs wear red berets today?
Cadet on this pictures wear reconaissance branch badge. http://www.wso.wroc.pl/Aktualnosci/CBE_2005/C12_d.jpg
In the past recon platoon in every class was formed after third or fourth semester. But this guy is from second semester (it's the first class after three years long absence of new class in the Academy, so he can't be older). So another question is: when in the present way of education of officer-cadets proces recon platoon (squad?) is formed?

You're right, correct name of this color is "maroon" in English; but these berets used to be called "red" before MP's introduced theirs scarlett berets.
I do know which branches are allowed to wear maroon berets in Polish Military. I just want to know which branches of officer-cadets wear this color of berets in the Academy today.

When the berets were introduced to the whole Army about half of the last decade there were 5 MA in the Army:
infantry/engeneering/NBC
cavalery/logistic
artilery
air defence
signals
Most of officer-cadets wear green berets like regular Army. Only cavalery branch students wear black. And there was recon platoon in every class of the infantry students; officer-cadets from recon plaoons were the only ones, who were allowed to wear maroon paratroopers berets.
Present day there is only one MA in the Polish Army. You can find there students of all branches. The question is who wears maroon berets in the Academy present day.

Mieszkam koło Zmechu i z tego co zawsze widziałem tylko zmechole (kadeci piechociarze, z których kazdy skacze na spadochronie) nosili takie beretki :) zielone to juz była artyleria itd, I remember when we had RED BERRETS here, we were a bit confused seeing those in RED and those in uhm if you ask me its Red, but seeing both soldiers you could tell that one berret miał sprany kolor :) za duzo wybielacza

The fact, that all of them (recon and infantry) pass through airborne training doesn't make any diffrence. A few years ago only recon platoons wore maroon berets in the MA.

Officer-cadets from the infantry and recon branch - YES.
But there was one main rule - to join recon platoon one had to be able to became paratrooper (pass thrugh medical test and volunteer for training). In infantry platoons one didn't have to. Of course almost evryone from infantry branch platoons became paratrooper, but it wasn't obligatory.

Cool! Like from my avatar woot
But why do they use so bizarre horses? :cantbeli:
Winged hussars' horses were extremely expensive. When a nobleman bought a horse (I mean a special horse for this formation) it was worth of more than three villages.
Many soldiers went bankrupt after losing a horse in battle.
You remember J. Ch. Pasek lost 2 horses and just therefore had to change his lifestyle.

Lublin (polish made). Not fast (around 120 km/h) but they are used as patrol cars or to carry squad of soldiers not for pursuits. ZW also uses Opel Vivaro and passenger cars like Opel Astra or Daewoo Nubira. Also small Fiat Seicento used as pilot car (drives on front of military column).

Unfortunatelly your knowledge is poor.
"Huculy" are small, tough horses used by non-polish ethnic nations ( Lemkowie,Bojkowie,Huculowie) lived before WWII in Beskidy and Bieszczady mountains. They weren't ever used in cavallery. They are too small. They were used to field works by farmers.
Those horses on the pictures are silesian horse (kon slaski) or english-arabic horse (angloarab) or major-polish horse (kon wielkopolski).
Cavallery generally use a tall, fast horses.

Poland was a Russian and German region for long time but so what ?
Are we a Germans ?
In "Vistula-Action" our government decided that those nations aren't Poles so they was relocated to west region of Poland and they have been prohibited to return to their homeland.
