That's the tank hatch dear:) (notice the tank crew hat)
Also what seems like a bullet hole, could bit of dirt, as there is no bended edges on the hole.

I cant see that being a shield at all.
It looks more like an oven door to me, but I know it's not that, but that sort of thing.
There is a hole straight up from the top left corner of the glass, it is a rivet hole.
It also looks like some sort of handle top right.
It also has allot of white scuffing on the left.
And the "hole" top left doesnt look like a hole, you would be able to see hit helmet.
IMO it is a consumer good, as the shattering of the "glass" looks more like plastic to me, definatly not a shield

well the rivet hole is just that a rivet hole :P those 2 holes over the helmet you cant see because of the dark colour of his helmet and the glass looked to me like bullet resistant glass of some sort

It is not a shield. I would agree that being a hatch of a tank's turret.

hmm but do hatches have glass in them? i thought the russian tanks hatches were much bigger? maybe it is an APC hatch or something like that?

No-one doubts the glass I guess - that's the bullet, but not sure whether the bullet went through or not.
The holes in question (to the left) may look like dirt or something - look at the pitch black colour, i.e. no variation on colour, like it really should be.
Notice the shape of "shield" looks like the hatch, but the thickness of it suggests that's the hatch of the lightly armoured vehicle.

I only know that, if that is bullet proof glass, it has been compromised, and if he isnt in an engagement (probably isnt as he is getting his photo taken in front of it), then he should probably not stand behind it. Once a shiled or bullet proof glass is cracked, its strength and protection diminishes greatly. If it is a shield, he should get another one immidiatly.

This is on top of a T-80... They commonly have a some sort of shield in addition to a normal hatch which is flung backwards when open and thus gives protection to the forward part of the tank commander...

thanks!
which make think of another thing. If the holes are made by normal rifles. Who the hell chooses to shoot against an t80 with rifles?! Maybe sharpnel but the ne in the glass is clearly a bullet.
Maybe a sniper trying to take out the tank commander?

He was probably turned out and some Chechen took potshots at him. Could have been shrapel from a RPG too.
