Hi, any ideas on what Special Forces are taking into the Field these days to make life easier e.g. stoves ,knives, warm kit, jackets and any other gadgets ???.I have heard that the new versions of the trusty K-BAR Fighting Knife are very popular with British Special Forces.

I'd say go to REI and check out whatever is made from black/tan/green material. Stuff from Mountain Hardware, Helly Hansen, Patagonia, North Face, etc. When I was on active duty (USMC) big knives like the Ka-Bar were used for opening tins of food when we had the luxury of eating something other than MREs. Folding lock balde knives were the most popular and useful - SOG, Spyderco, etc.
Just some thoughts...

Some sort of leatherman is pretty useful, and a little pocket knife is always good. Those big knives just aren't really useful (except for a knife figth as mentioned in the other thread). Oh the USSF have a new knife isssued to them when they pass the "Q" Yarborough knife I believe.
The poncho liner is one of the greatest pieces of gear. A headlamp (Stoli :D ) is pretty useful. I see guys carrying Nalgene bottles around. It really just depends on the guys, and where they are..

Dont forget an E-Tool, just in case some PFC hasn't been "E-Tool qualified" in the field.

oh yes and the ubiquitous chem-light batteries and one box of grid squares, and a PRC-E8 is good to have along as well.

if you're going in with some air support you might want a couple hundred feet of flight line. Of course you'll also want spare hubcaps and muffler bearings for the HMMWV. And if you're opperating in cold weather you might need a spare SINGARS heater.

Don't forget the cans of back blast. Also, If you are making a shelter, it is nice to have some umbilical cord to secure things.

Should you decide to join one of the, shall we say lesser developed, militia units of various african armies or freedom movements, tieing bits of cloth, bone or putting shards of mirrors in your hair, will prevent you from being wounded by the enemy's bullets :|
If it looks stupid but works it ain't stupid??
I think I'll stick to a bulletproof vest and helmet for balistic protection
