Picked this up from my great uncle a couple years ago for a hundred bucks. I think its a Dutch rifle but all it says on it is "1877" on the left side of the reciever. I am aware that it was indeed sporterized (the stock) but all metal parts are in tact and match. If you need more picks, just ask. Any help would be awesome

Lol thanks, as did I, just looking for a confirmation on if it really is and what caliber it fired. Looks to be a pretty massive round.

Apparently 11.3mm x 51R calibre. Could be a few versions though. 11m is a big pill.

Here's the ammo...these are actually 50-90 Sharps (the right casing) reformed and reloaded to shoot ******** (the left casing).

Here is a website with more info about it. I looked on gunbroker and they seem to be going for about 300-600 dollars.

I think Cali Joe was looking at one of these a while back. IIRC it's called a ********-Vitali when a magazine, designed by Vitali, was added.

It was the replacement for the Snider rifle. It served for 25 years, before being replaced by the Steyr-Mannlicher M1895 in 1895. I can't find anything about dissatisfaction with the rifle, as there are not a whole lot of historical sources on the rifle available to begin with. The M1895 was in service for far longer, around 45 years i think. After the war it itself was replaced by the Garand and the Lee-Enfield.

Pretty cool lookin rifle really. I have one as well, my grandfather picked up a long time ago for an unknown reason. Just sits in a closet. Will probably sell it sometime.
