It looks like the flag is being dropped on high-flying competitors vying for the Ansari X Prize suborbital sweepstakes.

A media alert was issued today by the X Prize Foundation of St. Louis, Missouri noting that “several key announcements” are to be made July 27.

The press statement is fueling speculation that the press event is likely to detail actual flight dates for back-to-back shots at winning the Ansari X Prize purse. Teams are to give the X Prize Foundation 60-days notice before attempts to win the prize.

The $10 million Ansari X Prize cash award will be turned over to the first team that privately finances, builds and launches a three-person spaceship that scoots up to 62.5 miles (100 kilometers) altitude, returns safely to Earth, repeating the feat with the same ship within two weeks.

According to the X Prize Foundation press statement today, “representatives from major teams including Burt Rutan from the American Scaled Composites team and Brian Feeney from the Canadian da Vinci Project team will be present”.

Next week’s X Prize Foundation press event is to be held at the Santa Monica Airport in Santa Monica, California.

This could get interesting. Everyone thinks Rutan's efforts are a slam-dunk. I wish both teams good-luck.
