WASHINGTON — A report of a bomb aboard a Turkish merchant ship Thursday forced the U.S. Coast Guard (search) to escort the vessel away from the port of Philadelphia and out into the sea off Delaware, senior Defense officials told FOX News.

The ship's master notified authorities about the possible bomb, officials said. The information was revealed after the captain refused to have portions of the ship searched by the Coast Guard.

Upon reaching a safe distance off the coast, officials expect to inspect the ship.

This particular vessel is well known to authorities and its prior movements had been tracked, senior Defense officials said.

Definately disturbing...

Who the hell does the captain think he is telling us we cant search the ship? We have every right to search any ship entering US waters...

After he told us we couldnt search the ship we should have went in with a VBSS team and done it anyways- and told the captain to stuff it.

They're going to force them to let them on the ship if they think there is a bomb onboard.

If you had a load of illegal cargo onboard, you woudn't let people search your ship, would you? Sheer logic.

He's within US territorial waters, the US suspect them og having illigal "stuff" onboard. To me it sounds like the Americans have a good case for doing a search or VBSS.

There was another terror-related insident today on amtrak when the washington dc- new york train was held up for an hour while bomb sniffing dogs and SRT teams searched the train for explosives and certain 'suspects'

Exactly.. many people assume drugs or bombs.. human smuggling is extremely profitable also. I can't seem to find anything major on the news sites about this though.

Captain said it was a joke.

Crew was probably jerking around the first Coast Guard team.

Then a crewman pops off a stoopid comment at a Coastie.

No doubt they had to call in a second team. Not all boarding teams are "body cavity search" qualified.

Oh they'll get a giggle over this one back at base. And another shipping line learns not to F with the USCG.

indeed, report now says the Captain meant it was a joke because an initial search was taking a while...

Sounds like that stupid ass Air France pilot that joked about the bomb at JFK... didnt like security.

But they have yet to board the vessel and do an extensive search...

If nothing else at least we can now rest assured that our government IS taking the offensive in preventing another attack.

Apparently they were tracking the ship long before they even had this incident, as it was listed as "of interest".
