Nederland neemt commando in Irak over
31-07-2003

Dutch take control of Iraqi province
July 2003

AMSTERDAM — The US military handed over control of a southern Iraqi province to the Netherlands on Thursday, as Dutch marines officially begin peacekeeping duties in the war-torn nation.

Dutch troops are now responsible for security in the al-Muthanna province, a thinly-populated desert region bordering Saudi Arabia. The 1,100-strong contingent — which is part of the British-led stabilisation force — is also in charge of helping the local administration re-establish itself.

The Cabinet decided on 6 June to dispatch the troops. Parliament backed the move later that month despite warnings that the troops would need to remain vigilant for Iraqi renegades regrouping in the area after carrying out attacks on Western soldiers.

A military expert had also advised Parliament that the Dutch would receive adequate support from the sufficiently armed, larger British force stationed in the region in the event of hostilities. British troops will also advise the Dutch about security threats, an NOS news report said on Thursday.

Dutch troops acclimatised in bordering Kuwait for two weeks before being placed on active duty, but reports earlier this week indicated that a viral infection was spreading through the unit. A little over 100 soldiers were infected with the virus — which causes a mild form of diarrhoea — before the contagion stabilised.

Most of the sick soldiers were reported to be stationed in As Samawah, the capital of the al-Muthanna province, but the infection did not delay the construction of the Dutch base camp and most of the troops have since recovered. The military had anticipated such an outbreak, it said.

The Netherlands is sending a 1,100-strong military mission to the province of Al-Muthanna in southern Iraq. 650 lightly armed marines and 450 support troops will join the Iraq Stabilization Force (SFIR).

The first Dutch contingent of 300 troops left for Iraq on 10 July. They are going for an initial six-month period, which may be extended for another six months. The cost of the Dutch mission is estimated at €65 million.

Objectives
The Dutch mission will help restore security and stability in Iraq. It will also contribute to humanitarian assistance and reconstruction. In addition, the mission will help enable the Iraqi people to govern themselves as soon as possible.

UN resolution 1483
The basis for the Dutch military contribution lies in United Nations resolution 1483, which calls on all member states to help reconstruct Iraq. Twenty countries have pledged troops for the Stabilization Force.

The Dutch troops fall under the command of the British division, which controls southern Iraq. So the British will determine their tasks and priorities. Any decision to withdraw Dutch troops from Iraq will be taken by the Dutch government.

Security
The government considers Al-Muthanna as a potentially dangerous province. But it believes that the Stabilization Force has enough resources to respond to any surge in violence. If armed conflict arises, the Dutch troops will be able to call on the British division's assistance.

GI_Rutger: the MG is FN MAG, notice carrying handle that is different than in Minimi, and the lack of magazine well below the belt feeding unit. Minimi has also lighter bipod.

My question: why some of those soldiers wear Dutch DPM, and the other US (I think US) woodland fatigues??

The Dutch Army wear UK temperate style DPM, while the Navy and RNLMC wear US style woodland (with some UK kit such as DPM arctic windproofs) for some reason.
