enough with the "who's better" threads already, we all know that Aus TAG is the best anyway. Regarding the question posed in your topic heading; the HRT could certainly be considered a "special" unit as much as the LAPD SWAT or Australian TAG could claim the title.

Has the Aussie TAG seen any action (damestic or foreign)? I know that HRT has does some pretty cool stuff and have deployed to Iraq, and the SAPF Special Unit see's some of the worlds largest crime anually. So experiance goes to the SAPF Special Unit if you ask me.

SAPS Special Task Force recruits from the the regular police stations. Recruits face a tough selection process of which only 25 percent will pass. They specialize in hostage rescue and high risk assaults on buildings, vehicles, aircraft, ships and or oil platforms. Special Task Force operators learns a wide range of skills including VIP protection, sniping and counter sniping, mountaineering, maritime infiltration extraction, and even airborne operations. In the year 2000, 230 South African Police Men were killed on the job.

For more information read "The Encyclopedia of the World's Special Forces" by Mike Ryan, Chris Mann and Alexander Stilwell.

For info on FBI HRT I personally recomend COLD ZERO by Christopher Whitcomb

I am from South Africa and know 2 people in the Task Force. The training is extremely hard. When they do qualify, they rank with the best in the world. If not better.
Africa, more especially South Africa is a brutal violent place. The Task Force has more practical experience in high risk situations than most of it's foreign conterparts.
Echo out.

Echo7, I agree that the SAP Special Task Force Operators are really good not only because of the training they recieve, but because of the priceless operational experiance they have. I don't know much about HRT operational history besides "Waco", "Ruby Ridge" and other in country ops. But I know they deployed to Colombia, Iraq, and I think Saudi Arabia.

This whole "who's the best" thing is fantastic, every one from their respective country nominates their own premier CT unit and then promptly informs us on the amount of books they have read involving said Special Forces / ninja outfit, thus this places them in a great position to denigrate all other world countries as having mediocre personal.

Considering the amount of military books I have read; by this law of logic I must be a pretty awesome terrorist analyst – in fact it's very hard to work out why the CIA hasn't been requesting my help in Iraq.

This really is'nt a "my countries better" thing. I was just curious what others thought about two superb CT- police units, and if their training, and operational experiance affects their performance.
One may be trained better, or the other may have more experiance so whos better? Are they both as good? Why?

Check out this thread, a pretty comprehensive compare/contrast of SOF units... http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=19755&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=32
