PALMDALE, CA - JULY 21: A yucca plant burns on Mount Emma at the Crown Fire on July 21, 2004 south of Palmdale, California. Unlike plants in the chaparral, which thrive in a fire-cycling environment, desert yuccas, succulents, and cacti are being killed by fires. With NO and NO2 greenhouse gases and the nitrogen blowing into southern California?s deserts from the cities, and in essence "fertilizing" the ground, these fire sensitive native plants are becoming surrounded by exotic plants and grasses which cause fires to spread further, like those of fire-dependent chaparral ecosystems. The gases are endangering places such as Joshua Tree National Park where fires have killed thousands of the famous cactus-like Joshua Tree yuccas.

Canadian soldiers march through the streets of the Netherlands during the first day of the Nijmegen Marches.

The Nijmegen Marches, held annually in the Netherlands, is a prestigious international event in which the Canadian Forces (CF) has participated since 1952. This year, the event takes place between 20-23 July and marks the 52nd time the CF has participated. Contingent commander Brigadier-General Ray Romses leads the 220-strong CF contingent. CF participation in the marches combines an important test of physical fitness and teamwork with an opportunity to commemorate Canadian participation in the liberation of the Netherlands in 1944.

Both pilots did survived the collision, thanks to the K-36D ejection seat they are alive
and well today, plus there is also an episode of "Seismic seconds" on National Geographic
Channel which describes and analyzes this accident.

Wilhelm Gustloff: 9,343 lives lost, the most tragic naval loss in all of history, sunk by the Soviet sub S-13 .

Less than ten days after sinking the Wilhelm Gustloff, Captain Marinesko of the S-13 torpedoed the General Steuben where 3400 refugees perished.

The Goya was carrying more than 7 000 German refugees when it was sunk by two torpedoes from a Russian submarine on April 16, 1945, making it one of the world's worst maritime disasters.

By comparison, around 1 520 people died when the Titanic sank in 1912.

Of those aboard the Goya, only 175 people were saved.
