Hi my fellow MPers,
Here's the story goes....... I have an old friend that might return to Hong Kong once he is graduated from the university, and I want to give something special to him as a token of friendship, preferably something that I'm more familiar with, such as a pocket knife......
So here's my questions for MPers that are familiar with knives & edged weapons regulations in Hong Kong........
1. Are assisted-opening knives legal to own in Hong Kong(it is not like that my friend will carry it around the streets in Hong Kong)?
2. If not, are manually-opened folders good to go?
3. What other specific rules that me and my friends have to observed to prevent any potential lawsuits upon my friend?
I googled already and I can't find any straight answers about this....... please help me out, thanks!

You might also check with import laws - some things that are legal to own, may be illegal to bring with...
Otherwise, I have no idea what Chinese laws are regarding assisted opening knives... Solly

ask your friend, he might know since he's lived there before. other than that, you might have to contact a law authority on Hong Kong weapons regulations.

1. Any assisted-opening knives (such as butterfly knife and sling blade) are restricted and considered as one of "offensive weapons" in Hong Kong. Other examples of offensive weapons including Mace spary, tear gas, handcuffs, airsoft guns with exceed 2.0J (joule), and expandable baton. Person with those knives could be arrested by police and charged as "unlawful possession of offensive weapons" under section 33 of Public Order Ordinance. Penalty shall be not more than 3 years imprisonment.
2. Manally-opened folders also could be considered as possession of offensive weapons if the person doesn't have any reasonable excuse when he/she is being questioned by police in any public place in Hong Kong. However, most of compact-sized/key-ringed pocket knives (such as Swiss Army knife and Leatherman pocket multi-tools) are ok to carry on street.
3. For more details on Public Order Ordinance Sect. 33 about possession of offensive weapons, please refer to: http://www.hklii.org/hk/legis/en/ord/245/s33.html

Hong Kong have very strict laws regarding to weapons. Batons, sticks, knives, daggers, nun chucks, darts...etc are all illegal to carry or even owned. Don't let kung fu movies mislead you.
