An interesting editorial from South Korea.

Country of No Ethnicity

MARCH 12, 2010 09:45
A gamut of views is circulating on why golf icon Tiger Woods had affairs exclusively with white women. The argument that he did so due to a sense of inferiority stemming from his dark skin color sounds compelling. Woods grew up amid discrimination as the only African American in a town of white people, and he has never really embraced his black heritage. He calls himself Cablinasian, or a combination of Caucasian, black, Native American and Asian. Woods is mixture of four ethnicities.
Actor Vin Diesel, who starred in the movie “Fast and Furious,” is highly popular in the U.S. He has a unique yet charming appearance as a mixed-blood person of Irish, Italian, German and Dominican Republic heritage. With the number of mixed-blood people whose ethnicities are hard to differentiate growing in the U.S., the country is embracing an era of non-ethnicity in which the racial divide is blurred. According to the daily USA Today, the portion of ethnic minorities among newborns in the U.S. increased from 37 percent in 1990 to 48 percent in 2008. If this trend continues, the population of ethnic minorities will exceed that of whites in 2050.

The “one-drop rule” is a time-honored U.S. tradition. This refers to the practice of classifying a person as black if he or she has even a hint of African heritage. Under this rule, Barack Obama is the first black U.S. president though he was born to and raised by a white mother. As interracial marriages have surged in number, the U.S. has changed the items on its census. The number of ethnic categories created in 2000 by the U.S. Census Bureau is 63, excluding the category “others.”

Witnessing a change in society where ethnic minorities become the majority, whites as the traditional mainstream group of America could feel uneasy. Yet they believe the trend will eventually have a positive impact on their society. As the term “melting pot” suggests, diversity is the main pillar of American society. This has a strong implication for Korea, which is rapidly shifting into a multicultural society due to the growing number of foreign women married to Korean men, North Korean defectors, and migrant workers. The term “pure blood people” can no longer remain a cause of national pride. Korea must learn from the U.S. experience on how to use the growing number of mixed-blood people to advance national development.

Woods can't be called African American by any stretch of the imagination. He's something like one-quarter Chinese, one-quarter Thai, one-quarter African American, one-eighth Native American, and one-eighth Dutch. Truly a person of no ethnicity. Strangely, I've seen some people in Thailand resembling him. Probably because he is half Asian if you do the calcs. But African American, no.

Interesting article, Ordie.
As the father of bi-racial/cultural kids, I'm glad they will have an easier time than my grandparents did.

Thanks.

Really? Generally speaking, most of the East Asian countries with which I am familiar are incredibly homogeneous in terms of...well, just about everything, including ethnicity. According to Wikipedia, less than 2% of the country's population is non-Korean. Compared to any virtually any other country, regardless of location, this is almost negligible.

By the way, why does the article mention DPRK defectors? Aren't they Korean as well?

I am not sure if it is a good idea to encourage assimilation to this degree. It normally isn’t it a bigger problem for large populated countries like Korea if few of them marry outside their ethnicity but it becomes a major problem for smaller countries that have a very low population and a large Diaspora (risk of assimilating away) which can put the nation’s very survival and future at risk, especially when surrounded by hostile neighbors that don’t assimilate and are putting out a dozen baby future nationalistic soldiers per family.
Even in US where the assimilation rate is the highest I still notice that most minorities tend to intergrade into the society instead of assimilating completely and forget about their roots.

It's always been the case.

Find an American who hasn't eaten a pizza, a taco, sushi and eggroll.

Well yea , OK but Ordie just ask any Italian and he will tell you that that is no real Pizza, or a Mexican who will say Taco Bell no, is no Mexican food, or ask a…oh hell with it, some people take this way too seriously. May I have a chicken fried steak with humus please? :)

If we eat fried chicken and waffles on the same plate, there's no reason to eat wiener schnitzel (Chicken Fried Steak, Milanesa) with hummus.

The article misses out on a few items though.

The "one drop" rule really only affects African Americans but does not affect other races so much. Most will classify themselves based on the Patriarchal side of the family unless he was never present.

There is also the fact that whites are becoming a minority due to Hispanic/Latino immigration, not so much other races. Some races like African Americans despite the one drop rule are even on the decline.

I'm 1/2 Spanish, 1/4 Italian, 1/8 Mexican (which is a spanish/indian half breed), 1/16 Native American, 1/16 White. I still list myself as Hispanic/Latino when the checkbox requires it and I consider myself Spanish and even took an opportunity to live in Spain for a while.

Granted though, we're all pink on the inside. I've verified this.

Caucasian, black, Native American and Asian. Woods is mixture of four ethnicities.lol @ those being "ethnicities".

Only in North America are they branded as such. When someome wants to say they like black chicks, they say "Hey guys! I like ethnic girls!". Stupid as hell.

I've been impressed that no one's screwed up the fractions. And Ordie, one of my specialties is fried chicken patties on fresh Italian or French bread with Hummus. My other vice is Chicken Fried Steak when I'm on the road. Jewish cooking would be complete if it only had biscuits.

Meh, even most "white " people here are a mix. Its just that the mix is a variety of European ethnicities. I find a lot of people tend to over analyze the whole thing. My girlfriend is "Indian" and every trip to visit semi-distant relatives only ingrains the notion that she's more culturally American than anything else.

Food wise though it leads to some sweet combinations. Never though adding Indian spices to Buffalo Wings would be good until we tried it.

About fractions, I seem to remember being 1/32 Swedish. But I can't remember how I arrived at that number. I think either my great grand father or great great grandfather was Swedish. If it's 1/32 which one is it?

Oh and being mixed race is extremely traumatic. Every time Norway beats Sweden in cross country my right toe twitches.p-)

You think so? Take away the name Tiger Woods and send him to Augusta to apply for a membership and see what happens.. He'll be black.

My kids are bi-racial and they did not have problems growing up. Of course they lived in an ethnically diverse city..San Diego CA

Let me see.. My mom is 3/4 white & 1/4 black. My dad was 3/4 black and 1/4 Seminole Indian with some Cuban African mixed in...So what am I? I'm black..But I call myself American!
