View Full Version : Ireland's Ethnic Minorities Want More Self-Expression in St. Patricks Day Parades

They want to "express" themselves on their own terms during St. Patricks Day events in Ireland.
http://www.physorg.com/news187956645.html
Those members of Ireland's ethnic minorities who participated in last year's St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin want to be able to express their own cultures more fully in future events.
The claim has been made by academics from Queen's University Belfast who have been working with colleagues in the University of Limerick and St Andrews in Scotland on a research project into Irish identities.
While the parade participants congratulated the organisers on creating an impressive and inclusive event, many from Ireland's ethnic communities said they would prefer it if they were allowed to express themselves on their own terms, rather than have to adhere to an overarching theme.
"We found that people born in Ireland felt experiencing diversity in the parade could make their lives more interesting and enable them to sample something new and exotic.
Equally they could carry on their lives as usual while feeling good about themselves for being 'tolerant'.

Don't want to take part in St. Patricks day? don't.
Want to try to change St. Patricks day to suit you? scoot off back to where ever you came from, then you won't have that dilema will you. End of problem all round.

Bring on the green hijabs.
Lets have ramadan-a-ding-dong with a piss up at dusk so we can all be inclusive. How would that work?

I can see it now, first off comes the Somali Pirate refugee float, followed by the Salute to VBIED's from the Free Palestine society. A Piper and then the Iranian Bikini team in their Burkhas, the Hibernians, and Finally a Bobbing for Semtex float sponsored by Zimbabweans for Mugabe.....

there is an ironic twist to this.......immigrants in Ireland wanting to express themselves, all be it in St Pat's parades.......and Irish immigrant communities around the world wanting to express their culture in.....parades :)

What's keeping them from "expressing" themselves? As someone mentioned, Green hijabs or green knitted hats. Maybe some green crap in their green hookahs? Maybe some green belly dancers! Do they even know what it's for? Hell, doing that would be positive "expression" over there as if they were integrating. Is it really that hard?
Well consequently most Americans don't either although it is an excuse to buy cheap green beer and get drunk. p-)

Nothing is stopping them creating their own parades.

Well St. Patrick wasn't even Irish he was a British-Roman and was suggested to originate from near Cumbria in England.

getting drunk with friends and watching a parade, great way to spend an afternoon, i dont see whats wrong with that. If they dont want to take part in Irish culture or Irish holidays, then they could just leave Ireland.

Who are those minorities...?
They are Chinese, South Asian, Portuguese, Polish, Maori, and a number of other ethnic minorities, primarily from Eastern Europe. These include most recently the immigration of people from Hungary in many smaller towns in the west of province.

The Ironic thing in Glasgow is that St Andrews day comes and goes and not as much as a fuss is made of it compared that that day which is an excuse of one hit wonders to hit the town ...
And every Bar wants to cash in on it .. And yet you would think these people that have moved to Ireland would use there loaf ..
Put there own Parades on instead of tryin to gate crash another event .. In london you have Notting hill carnival which is recognised all over ..

It's worse than that, it's an aspect of self loathing for your own culture, to assume that your cultural events are somehow bad because a swirl of other interest groups aren't allowed to bend them to their own flavor.

I'm a firm believer that if you go live in another country with a totally different culture than yours then you're bound to assimilate to that society the best you can. Whatever good qualities from your own culture will surely be adopted by your new environs, sooner or later. Anything good can't be bad. Even in culture. I'm pretty sure that a lot of things in St Paddy's day didn't originate from a single culture, like all celebrations or holidays, it's an evolution of culture. But for anyone group or individual to dictate to another isn't going to be a good idea.

Pack the bags we're going on a guilt trip! Yeah lets all be ashamed to do anything connected with our culture without first bowing and scraping to someone elses idea of what they want.
Look - join the parade and have fun - you are welcome to, or if you don't like our culture go and make your own parade and express yourself separately,
or simply leave if you somehow manage to still be pissed off.
As already said, Notting Hill carnival is world famous, why not make a competing event, call it the PC Parade.
Don't be hanging out of my man ****. GET OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.
A lot of Eastern Europeans pretty much keep to their own, not as much as the chinese, but those who want to integrate do so easily.
I'm sort of confused as I don't think any of these people would be feeling oppressed or excluded in Ireland.

Perhaps western expats in south Asia should suggest that we be allowed to express our culture in their historic cultural/religious events, then time how long until the AK47s and petrol-bombs come out...

Maybe these people are on to something. After all, green beer is revolting :-P
We see this sort of "my culture is so superior to yours that we need to change yours to be more like mine to make it better" attitude around here all the time. My view is "Here's your coat, what's your hurry? And don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out..."

I thought everyone was Irish yesterday? The "wearing of the green" is completely non denominational. From what used to be a Catholic thing, has gone worldwide and morphed into a celebration across the globe.
And some folks feel left out in Ireland?
Maybe I'm a little off the mark here, but they can get ****ed.

I don't know, you go to any of the parades parties ect on St OPaddies Day now and you'll see plenty of "minorities" giving it a welly, in Galway the Brazillians throw a great party in the street....it's not often you see some 75 year old Irish farmer dancing with a semi naked 22 year old Brazillian fine bit of arse.....

At what point an ethic minorities becomes a citiznen like everyone else and not a "guest"?

When they have accepted and adopted to their new surroundings (i.e., customs, traditions, language, laws).

right, this claim that minorities want more self expression on paddys day was made by some professor in belfast.....not by any group representing minorites, stop getting your knickers in a twist.,
I was at the parade in Dublin. got chatting to 4 indonesians who have lived in ireland for between 2-6 years, devote muslims.....the girls were wearing green headscarfs and the guys were decked out in green as well. Basically they got way more into the whole st patricks thing then the irish who just use the day as an excuse to get hammered.

Again I am Anglo-Irish and I got to Romania by bus.;)
Whereas many Irish born under British rule went and volunteered to serve in the British Army due to the Mother of all Economic Depression exsisting in Ireland between 1700 - 1930 (some would argue the economic depression exsisted well into the 1970, so our best export were our young people to locations all over the world,) and traditionally the oldest son would be in line to inherit what little his father owned, the second son traditionally became a Roman Catholic priest, the other sons would often join the military or emigrate to find "fame and fortune".
I did it in reverse, I was born and raised in England, went to Ireland aged 10 joined the Irish military at 17 and served for over 21 years, including service with the United Nations in Lebanon, before moving to live in Bavaria, then onto Romania in 2000 where I met and married my wife Adriana in 2003.
