Some upbeat news for a change.

India and China lift millions out of slums: UN

Betwa Sharma/PTI / United Nations March 19, 2010, 14:00 IST

India and China have together lifted at least 125 million out of slums between 1990 and 2010, and improved the lives of slum dwellers more than any other country, a new UN report has said.
India has lifted 59.7 million people out of slum conditions since 2000. Slum prevalence fell from 41.5 per cent in 1990 to 28.1 per cent in 2010. This is a relative decrease of 32 per cent, the study found, according to the report called State of the World’s Cities 2010/2011.

"Lessening poverty and improving conditions in slums are part of India's urban development policy," the report said, pointing out four main reasons for it.

First, building the skills of the urban poor in their chosen businesses, and by providing them micro-credit. Second, providing basic services and development within slum settlements, thus improving living conditions.

Third, providing security of tenure to poor families living in unauthorised settlements, improving their access to serviced low-cost housing and subsidised housing finance. Fourth, encouraging the poor to take part in decision-making and community development efforts.

China has made the greatest progress on this front with improvements to the daily conditions of 65.3 million urban residents, the report said.

Proportionally, China's urban population living in slums fell from 37.3 per cent in 2000 to some 28 per cent in 2010, a relative decrease of 25 per cent.

Sure is good news.

In case of India, I guess with the creation of employment opportunities in rural areas itself due to the National Rural Employment Guarantee Program, the immigration to big cities from villages should have come down a lot.

So, I guess not only the slums, the report arguably reflects the improving living conditions in rural areas also.

Though, a lot more needs to be done still.

Eliminating Slums is not the same as eliminating poverty. North Korea has zero slums because the police keep them out of the cities.

But even with that, there's a rising amount of slums each year.

India - 28.1 per cent in 2010

China's - 28 per cent in 2010

Now this is laughable.

The topic is elimination of slums and not poverty. It is about taking people out of slums and giving them proper houses.

Yep, laughing at the misery of those born into poverty might be a good way to forget your own problems.

But seeing your posting history on this forum I am sure everyone laughs at you.

"Nope read the OP again"

Overall, the UN report finds that the number of people living in slums has risen from 777 million in 2000 to 830 million in 2010, and warns that unless urgent steps are taken the number could rise to 900 million in 2020.

"Yep, laughing at the misery of those born into poverty might be a good way to forget your own problems."

Whats laughable was that they believe that the porportion of those living in slum conditions in india and china are the same

"But seeing your posting history on this forum I am sure everyone laughs at you."

Yes i know that to a lot telling the truth is funny then telling what you want them to hear.

I took this picture two days ago. These are where the poor who can't afford a apartment in the city have been relocated to after the slums have been demonished.
I was interested in housing price of my city, so I care about how the welfare for the poor goes. I actually don't want it to be too good, or it may depress the housing price.

Inside of the community is quite good, but some places lacks maintainence. The community is a bit far from city centre.
Overally I quite like the governments' plan. Demonish the slums in the city, thus force the poor out of city centre. Reconstruct the central area of the city in a way that best suits economy. And use the money from the development to help the poor. This way the city expanded, looks better, more rich people can move in. The poor get better welfare. Everyone should be happy.
