A Navy ship, planes and helicopters are returning home to Jacksonville this week after scheduled deployments of more than a month in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, the Navy said in news releases Thursday.
The guided missile cruiser USS *****sburg is scheduled to pull into Mayport Naval Station today after participating in Summer Pulse '04, the Navy's first exercise under its new Fleet Response Plan.
Antisubmarine Helicopter Squadron 11 also will return today to Jacksonville Naval Air Station following two months aboard the USS Enterprise, another Summer Pulse participant.
S-3B Vikings from Sea Control Squadron 31 are expected to return to Jacksonville NAS Sunday after a six-month deployment on the USS George Washington. The aircraft carrier was on patrol in the Persian Gulf supporting troops on the ground in Iraq. Mayport-based USS John F. Kennedy and its strike group recently relieved the Washington.
In the Summer Pulse exercise, seven of the Navy's 12 aircraft carrier strike groups quickly deployed in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. On the way to the Persian Gulf, the JFK and its strike group also participated in the exercise, which ended this week.
During the exercise, ships and shore bases trained for a large-scale operation using surface ships, aircraft, submarines and amphibious vessels in a full range of maritime warfare.
"Our sailors performed admirably ...," said Lt. Cmdr. Steven Cooper, administration officer for the helicopter squadron on the Enterprise, about the squadron's efforts. "Their mettle and determination to get the job done made a complete success of this difficult assignment."
