Three Americans arrested in the Afghan capital for running a private jail said on Wednesday (July 21) they were working for the the U.S. government.
The three appeared on Wednesday in a Kabul courthouse where charges of illegal imprisonment and hostage-taking were made.
The leader of the group of vigilantes is Jonathan, or 'Jack', K. Idema, whom the U.S. military says had passed himself off as a U.S. government or military official.
The U.S. military and NATO peacekeepers have said the group was not acting on behalf of, or in conjunction with, their forces.
But Idema insisted they were working with full knowledge of the U.S. government.
"We were working for the U.S. counter-terrorism group, we were working with the Pentagon and some other agencies. (So you're working with U.S. government knowledge?) We were in touch with the Pentagon sometimes five times a day, at the highest level, everyday," Idema told reporters on Wednesday.
The three were arrested this month after a brief shootout in Kabul.
They and some Afghan accomplices had been illegally detaining and interrogating people they believed to be terrorists, Afghan officials said.
The gang was caught with eight prisoners in their jail in a Kabul house.
One of their prisoners, Ghulam Sakhi, an Afghan who ran a gas shop in the capital, spoke about the treatment he says he endured during his 12 days detention.
He claims he was tortured by the three Americans and some Afghan translators working for the three.
"They (referring to the three Americans) poured boiling water on us, and beat us, and asked us to show people who they suspect to be terrorists. They tortured us several time. There were Afghan translators and some other Afghans who are not here right now. They (referring to thoseAfhgans who were not present in court) were armed. And they were also torturing us, beating us, pouring boiling water on us," said Sakhi.
But Idema denied this.
