A Swedish flag was set alight outside the country's embassy in Malaysia on Friday as protesters gathered to demand action be taken against cartoonist Lars Vilks and newspapers that published his caricatures of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Around 200 demonstrators from Muslim groups turned out in Kuala Lumpur to protest the caricatures which depict the prophet as a dog. The demonstrators handed over a letter of protest to Sweden's ambassador in Malaysia, Helena Sångeland.

"They want to protest against the the publication of Lars Vilks' drawings in Swedish newspapers. Their demand is that the Swedish government acts against the Swedish newspapers which published the pictures and also against Lars Vilks," Helena Sångeland told news agency TT.

The demonstration ended with the pulling down of the Swedish embassy's flag, which was then burned.

"It was very surprising and something that we can not tolerate. We have reported the matter to the police," Sångeland said.

According to the ambassador the youth league for the main Islamic party, PAS, and several other Muslim organisation threatened a boycott of Swedish products in demonstrations held a couple of weeks ago.

A smaller demonstration with only a handful of participants was held outside the embassy on Thursday. On that occasion the Malaysian right-wing group Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) handed over a protest letter.

Despite angry reactions from many in Malaysia, the ambassador does not consider there to be any risk for Swedish visitors to the country.

"Absolutely not. Nor can I see that our bilateral relations should change because of this," she said.

This episode reminds me of our to be imported French King, defending a French embassy in Belgium or Holland being run down by protestors during the Napoleonic wars he calmly walked out with sword drawn saying that anyone wanting to get to the French flag would have to get past him :hug:

In any case there seems to have been about 200 protestors, but Malaysian military/security was there. There's a video floating around of it, from the looks of it they allowed it to be taken down. The situation was similar back in 2006 in Syria when our embassy was torched, a police state like that would never let an embassy be attacked like that without atleast knowing about it.

Yes, it is the host country's duty to ensure the safety of foreign legations. With that said I rank the competence of the Swedish Foreign Department very low in an international comparison, and they have a notoriously bad reputation at home. I'm surprised there hasn't been an embassy hostage situation yet. These people are clueless.

This limit on freedom is what made it possible for us to enjoy 50 years of peace and prosperity. No government can rule effectively when people can criticize them under the guise of freedom of speech. It's a poor observation. They did not just burn any flag they got at Ikea, from what it seems they entered the embassy compound, which is generally regarded as Swedish territory, and tore down the official flag. If the compund is unsafe the flag should lowered and the compound should be temporarily abandoned. A few examples of that for our embassies during the Danish cartoon row.

One can of course not control what the enemies do to your country's flag but surrendering flags is a huge no-no. But what is there to be expected from a bunch of clueless sossedjur and inbred nobility.
