I'm not sure but remember seeing a show a while back which had some really convincing facts about it.
I'd like to think it existed because the idea is cool that a highly advanced civilization once existed but I don't think it is too likely.

Did Atlantis exist? Well pardon me - she may not have had any hits last year but Atlantis Morrisette is still one of the most influential musical artists out there.
You know, maybe this post should be under "the worst jokes you know" thread...

Don't they think it was a settlement on the coast of Spain?

Something like it very well may have. Anyone ever read any of Dr. Robert Ballard's (the guy with the mini-subs who found the Titanic/Bismark/and others) and others' stuff on the Black Sea and the Great Flood of the Bible? It's pretty interesting, him and others proved that at roughly the right point in history, the land between the sub-sea level Black "Lake" and the Mediterranean Sea had broken away, probably due to a combination of gradual (normal, though perhaps caused by the end of an mini-ice age) and sudden (heavy rain) erosion and within a relatively short period of time (a week weeks probably), today's Black Sea was formed. The Black "Lake" had had cities and towns around it (these were discovered by Ballard, if I remember correctly), which were wiped out by the flood. If one looks at the size of the Black Sea versus the supposed size of the Black "Lake," it's the equivalent of several nations' worth of land. To a local observer, it might have seemed like the entire world had been flooded out.
Perhaps something similar happened to someplace like Atlantis? Perhaps the stories are the same one? Or perhaps the volcano/earthquake stories hold true?
Have a good one, and just some thoughts...
Perhaps something similar happened
Why hell yeah! If it didn't how the hell do you think those Stargate boys got to go there after they got tired of going to that planet that looked like Egypt all the time? Jeesh! :D
