An unfortunate situation for sure. At the end of the war the Soviets deported all of the German citizens left in the area and imported thousands of Russians. Cities, towns, streets, etc were all given new Russian names and much of the history of the area was lost. Just one more example of cruel Soviet behavior that led to degradation.

Boo hoo, places were given Russian names after it became Russian territory. I'm sure keeping the German names would have gone over well after they had just murdered 27 million of its people. The place was annihilated due to fighting against the Nazi's, it had to be built from scratch. Germans were deported all over Europe after the war after what they had done.

Indeed. Königsberg was largely destroyed during the fighting. Most of what is seen today is Russian Kaliningrad.

Interestingly enough the more I read about the Soviet Union the more I despise it. I was actually expecting my feelings to go the other way as they usually do when I become more aware of an entity's history but not so in this case.

From the wiki link you posted...
Currently it is one of Russia's best performing regional economies, bolstered by a low manufacturing tax rate, as set by its 'Special economic Zone' [SEZ] status, given by Moscow. As of 2006, one in three televisions in Russia is made in Kaliningrad, and its population is one of few in Russia which has seen recent strong growth.

If to read documents (i.e. the facts), instead of false interpretations of journalists, in you the respect for the SU has woken up at least. But if you wish to live in dreams about blood-thirsty Soviet Union, please.

Germans were deported in far greater numbers from Poland and Czechoslovakia and so what? The Germans invaded the Soviet Union and killed nearly 30 million people. It amazes me to this day that Stalin for once in his life acted with restraint... If I were in his position Germany would've been destroyed once and for all.

They weren't exterminated, stop making things up. Ethnically cleansed yes. I don't believe Poles nor Russians could have lived side by side Germans after what they had done to them, innocent or not (and don't give me that crap about innocent German civilians, most German civilians actually believed in their "struggle"). It's nice for Americans to pontificate, whose mainland and civilians were never attacked and who came out of WWII as the main benefactor with something like 50x less dead than SU.

Best post so far.
Maybe I should move back where my grandparents come from.
:)
Unfortunately I have no skills at all as a peasant...
But the place names are somewhat ridiculous, the poles simply use the polish for of the german name, but the soviets just used fantasy names.
And fantasy names even for those places that have a connection to russian history like Tilsit or Friedland or Eylau.

In principle, ethnically cleansing the German population was the wrong thing to do, but in practise - WW2 had just taken place! I would imagine most residents of the city would have long fled before the Red Army took it. Keeping the land as part of East Germany would make no sense as it would be way too far from its new borders.

Then again let them be. Ruins of old churches symbolises the death of religion very well.
Some relatives of mine actually visited the place where my grandmother's family came from.
It is deserted, somebody tore down the ruins of the farm(destroyed by soviet Sturmoviks) but nothing was ever built in its place and the whole farmland is abandoned. Foundations still standing.
Practically no one lives or even works on the land for kilometers around. Strange, once it was an agricultural landscape, not it is basically wilderness.
So maybe if everything else fails I just move back and open a hippie commune there :D
It is nowhere near Kaliningrad, though, in the vincinity of Stallpönen/Nesterov near the Lithuanian border.
If I don't find enough hippies maybe I could take up the old family trade of smuggling things from/to Lithuania.
Which apparently was how they made the actual money back then...
But strange to think that a fast talking city guy like me who feels uneasy with too much green around him is descended from a bunch of wood headed hard drinking but not very talkative east prussian peasants from what was even then one of the most sparsely populated areas of europe.

Not this year, its been just two years since EU and Russia got a deal on a simplification of visa regime (regarding the multiple-entry visa) and thought the rest is still in the diplmatic hands it wont happen this year. Anyway its ironic that for EU citizien it is easier to get Chinese visa than Russian. Alas the registration on police office for family members of Russian citiziens which came for visit should be abolished, it´s nothing more than beurocratic problem.

I read that most of the Churches in Kaliningrad were actually destroyed / not maintained anymore after the War, and fell to ruins mostly in the afterwar years. But I also read that recently the People living there are more and more discovering the historical value of their region and start to try to renovate also the German memorials and buildings. Depends also on the economic situation of the region as I see it.

Old German era ruins/repaired buildings are fascinating, would be interesting to see pictures of those before WWII.

Ethnic German minorities in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Baltics, Russia, etc... mostly co-operated on all levels with the invading Nazi armies and in many cases even joined up. East Prussia was a particular stronghold of Nazi support and militancy; you can sure bet as hell that most of those German civilians who fled from Kaliningrad were doing so out of fear of the 'Mongol Hordes' that they supported the culling and invasion of in the first place. Probably the only innocent German civilians were those from Germany proper.

Im gonna trolls Russians heceforth by calling it Konigsberg ;)
Also, if you consider the only good Germans came from Germany proper, where do you draw the line exactly? Austria technically is a German country, that simply has too many pretensions to being separate and cooler.
Where Kallingrad had been "German" for centuries, a millenia nearly - unless somehow the Prussian tribes, who had been Germanic for centuries somehow still weren't Germans. Hell, they DEFINED Germanness half the time before the unification into Germany.
On a random note, one of my friends who is Prussian-ethnic dreams of retaking the old lands back, and extending into the Baltics XD. I don't really blame him - Prussia pretty much died as an entity after WWII - to be Prussian was not German anymore. Berlin, its historic capital, was now the prime battleground. Everyone found it easier to blame Prussian militarism than what was the real rationales for WWI and II. I suppose there is some German sympathy in the US Midwest in general, Wisconsin in particular as we are majority German. For some reason however, Germanfest means people dress in lederhosen x_x. As far as I know, most of the German-ethnic population here derive from Prussia.
Sorry Python but your comment was utterly stupid and uneducated.
East Prussia was "Germany proper". It was as german as Frankfurt or Stuttgart or whatever.
No sane minded person would've claimed this territory for another nation.
It was german longer than Petersburg is russian!
In fact, russia didn't even exist when the city of Königsberg was first founded.
Even if you consider the fact that Königsberg was ironically founded by the King of Bohemia (hence the name) and was long ruled by Poland, it was always a german city.
Silesia was always an area where polish and german people lived together and it is hard to tell apart who is what (hence Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski ;)).
East Prussia was always inhabited either by Pruzzen (native baltic people related to Lativans or something) or germans.
Not to mention the fact that the name "Prussia" for the kingdom comes from what was later called "east Prussia".
So basically east Prussia was as brown as the rest, but they had no special reason to become especially national socialist.
In fact east Prussians were regarded as a bunch of dull hard drinking tough peasants mostly, except for Königsbergers who had a reputation for fast talking...

Stop being babies Russia... Oh noes! People are talking bad about a Government you no longer have, get over it. You guys seriously can't just take anything lightly, any mention of Russia in a bad light and you go ****ing nuts. Chill the hell out.
Also, Detroit went to **** because of the U.S policy of being far too pro-human. If we made the ****ing degenerates scramble for themselves we wouldn't have so many and we'd be better off. So cruel and anti-human is not the description you are looking for... Nice and pro-human is what ****ed us over.
I thought it was because American auto industry forgot how to make good cars, outsourced half the jobs, and lost a huge market share to Japanese and German manufacturers whose product only kept improving.

Like most land that was re-arranged in the 1940s, it's history, deal with it. Russians live there now, it's not right to ask them to leave or become Germans. Almost everyone has moved on with their lives. Unlike some other people who were rearranged in that same time period (*cough*Palestinians*cough*)

I thought most were deported.
You're from the few who stayed?
imo, Prussia was always the most interesting German state, one reason among many since they essentially were kind-of-Germans, declared themselves part of the Germanic group, and then proceeded to take over part of the Baltics, and call them Prussians, and by extension, German. Sure, Bavarians mighta been pissed at this, but its not like it didn't work. Austria didn't like it either, until they figured out it was a pretty swell way to operate. Imo, Prussians are the 'missing link' between Russians and Germans.

I believe hes a Russian living in Kaliningrad. I wouldnt say Prussia is the link between Germany and Russia, even though Prussia sounds very close to Russia, but Prussia and specifically its military culture is admired in Germany and Russia.

You can meet such "evil soviet wasteland" near neighborhood in the south of Kaliningrad and all western Poland in so called "recovered territories"
still i tend to believe that it's more of a post-soviet than soviet issue.

Still looks ****, especially the places where old architecture buildings stand side by side with renovated Soviet and post-Soviet ones.
Actually it doesn't look that different from cities in the former GDR.
Dresden in 1991 looked pretty much the same, and other bombed cities like Magdeburg or Halberstadt still do.
East Berlin is a bit better due to 1980s reconstruction of unter den Linden but the area around the Alexanderplatz is similar.

Of course they generalize. And patriotism is good. Anti-patriotism, like shown by some members here, often is a sign of mental illness.
P.S. "Intelligencia", with the the quotation marks? As opposed to you, the Intelligencia?
Well, word "Intelligencia" has pretty bad meaning these days. It is hard to find "intelligentski" people who are not stupidly criticize everything, but doing something good in real life.

Russians who immigrated around the same period tend to sling even more mud at a place that gave them foundations and knowledge to make the big bucks in the West. Said that, there are very few ethnic Russians in immigration (as opposed to Russian-speaking immigrants).
And I'm not generalizing but rather speaking from personal experience. I see ex-Soviet circa late '80s immigrant Juice every day, and they are not the most pleasant people to deal with. Most adequate and mentally balanced immigration wave came around '99-2004, mostly professionals looking for greener pastures as opposed to political or religious immigrants. Plastic Paddy-like "Patriots" pretty much exist only on message boards. In real life I don't remeber when was the last time politics made in into a conversation, besides talking about local political affairs that have zero to do with homeland.

There are plenty of ethnic Russian immigrants; I don't know how it is in the States but here in England there are a huge amount of ethnic Russian immigrants from the Baltic states for example, as well as from Russia and other republics who came in smaller waves in the 90's and during the last decade. In terms of Russian Jews I can't think of many; I do know a few here but just not that many.

x2 - With the exception of the communities of nationalist, pro-Israel, ex-Soviet Jews living in New York and in some other cities (mostly belonging to the first waves of immigrants in the 70's and 80's, rather than the later secular, economically-motivated Jewish immigrants).

Just because 1960's-1980's architecture is not very popular or considered beautiful today, it doesn't mean its bad. That's hardly "Soviet or post-Soviet ones", that kind of architecture is found in masses in Western Europe and North America. Wait for one or two more decades, and people will find a lot of reasons to appreciate that kind of architecture.
And what do you think, that they can just replace all the "Soviet and post-Soviet" buildings? lol
