US special forces exit from a military transport plane, 31 July 2003, at Osan US Air Force Base, some 50 kilometres (31 miles) south of Seoul. A Stryker platoon of highly mobile and combat-ready US special forces troops arrived for their first overseas training to familiarize themselves with terrain and conditions on the Korean peninsula. North Korea reacted angrily to the arrival of Stryker troops, accusing the US of sending "a scout party to ignite another war of agression."

Is there a mistake in the description? I thought Stryker was sort of like Marine Light Armor - mobile infantry, not SF. Does anyone know?

who knows....maybe they shipped the strykers instead of humvees...

....or maybe SF instead of mechanics....

....ya never know....it *IS* the Army ;)

Or maybe the jack ass that wrote the article dosent have a friggin clue what hes talking about and had to have 300 words to make the article and Special Forces is two words and it grabs a lot of attention. The Stryker is a light/mech Inf outfit not a Special Forces unit.

well my guess is that it's a combination of that, and the fact that some marine units are special operations capable, so he put 2 and 2 together to get 5.

Those guys coming out of the plane are probably light infantrymen that are attached to the Striker Unit, or part of it, whatever.

An image of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is printed on a commemorative postage stamp issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the Korean War truce in Pyongyang. North Korea (news - web sites) celebrates July 27 as the 'Day of Victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War.' JAPAN OUT *******/Korea News Service

The North Koreans are fed propaganda that claims the United States invaded the North. The truth is that it was their own agression that is responsible for the situation at hand....

Why would you say that they are Marines? Marines don't use the Stryker.

No, but the Corp does use the LAV, which supprize suprize, is what the Stryker is based on.

I do agree that PA personel that write photo captions are our greatest form of disinformation out there.

Thought the Army only had a hard-on for tracked light armor. Now they're stealing our LAV, the audacity ;)

HAHAHA!!!! I wasn't aware that elements of the 2 Infantry DIV were called "Special Forces."

Actually gents, when the LAV was first evaluated by the DOD, it was joint Army/Marines project. The Army wanted them to outfit the 9th ID (Motorized), up at Ft. Lewis, Washington, but dropped out of the project leaving the Marines to foot the bill. The 9th got disbanded, and the idea of a rapidly deployable motorized unit was shelved.

After the Army had problems getting armor on the ground in during Just Cuase, the 82nd leased a few LAVs from the Marines for use by its cav scout unit. They thought they were a hell of a lot better than the old Sheridans they were using.

Then to cap it off they had a number of problems getting armored units overseas quickly, and needed something a little lighter, so viola, the Stryker and the new Interium Combat Brigades (which what you see deploying in the photo. ) were born. I'll give you one guess where there from. What a shock, Ft. Lewis, Washington as part of the 2nd ID's ICB.

I live in Washington, and I saw some strykers headed east on I-90 less than a week ago. I suspect they were going to train at the range in Yakima, WA. The intersting thing to me was that they were marked as being from the 25th ID, not the 2nd. Does anyone have info about this? As far as I know, the 25th ID is a Light Infantry Division stationed in Hawaii.

Please advise.

The 25th ID HQ is in Hawaii, but one of it's brigades is on Ft. Lewis.

Yes they are from the 25th ID. I've seen them going East on I-90 as well and I've also seen them down at Fort Lewis as well as had the chance to play on them. My Brother-In-Law is a gunner but his unit is at Fort Knox till the end of summer.

Well, they seem to be sticking with the idea that they're US
Special Forces. Would be kind of strange for them to keep
getting it wrong seeing as they have someone embedded with
them.
