hmm, airsoft vs paintball, thats a bit like comparing tennis to ping pong.

Ping pong has smaller fields and faster action. But if you know how to play tennis, you can have some nice action too ;)

Tried both, stuck at Airsoft. Paintball's fast speed is nice, but the cosplay and the whole military relation to airsoft is just more fulfilling :)

Paintball is Sports, Airsoft is fun, i prefer the last one ;)

Just remember you might find your airsoft guns little bit werid. They all look very real, but when they're fired, reality strikes. :)

Airsoft all the way. Paintball is just to costly for ammo, reason for switching over.

Well , I'm more interested of airsoft's military simulations more than anything else.

You get to dress up "like the real thing" , and fire with weapons that are replicas of the real thing as well. And with these elements , at least in my opinion you get to have fun with that close "military" - feeling.

In Finland paintball players have transformed the whole "hobby" closer towards sport than Airsoft's military simulation. Some of them don't play with camouflaged clothing on , since one might think them to fall under the same category as Airsoft - players that way.

But maybe that's just because many consider Airsoft to be something that kids do. "Paintball" is for adults , "Airsoft" is for the kids , some people say. In my opinion that is not correct at all . But perhaps some of the negative "cases" that have happened in the Finnish airsofting community over the years have really given power to that "idea".

Agreed , we've had some cases where young boys have shot each others eyes out with the cheap spring-operated pistols. Of course I wouldn't even call them airsoft - players , but the media sure does jump on the idea if it gets the chance.

Airsoft:

Cheaper overall
Cheaper to play a days game
Stock guns will perform relitively good against other players upgraded guns
More open to various eras with period equipment
Range and accuracy better in my experience
Gucci kit isn't ruined by paint

I play paintball but REALLY want to try some airsoft with guys who in it for the realism. I see people playing alot but they all wear plain everyday clothing and are running around like it's a squirtgun fight.

until I find some people around here who plat it for the military re-creation style I don't want to play for fear of ruining it for myself.

I prefer paintball more, because of the pain. Airsoft is great for realism except when it comes to the actual purpose of the game. Plastic bbs dont hurt when you wear tac vests.

True paintball is more expensive, but there few fields for airsoft, and the chance of getting mistaken for an armed madman is too great if you're seen in public.

Simply put you play army, with the emphasis on military realism. You play/fight like you would if it were real military operations with infantry. Only problem is the BB's themselves aren't that great. BB's are what the highly realistic, but inexpensive guns shoot compared to paintballs.

most of you guys are only thinking of the speedball side of paintball, i like the more military-like side of paintball where camoflage, strategy, and quietness helps win the game, the game of woodsball!

Keep in mind there are two different types of paintball- milsim (also known as woodsball) and speedball. I play milsim paintball, and my guess is it's pretty similar to airsoft (we even have guys who use airsoft side arms).

Airsoft is probably more authentic and re-inactment oriented then milsim paintball, but with paintball you get the advantage of marking your target and paying the price (of pain) when you get hit.

Regarding realism- paintball can't quite pull it off, although these days there are more options for realistic markers- RAM4 (which is arguably more realistic then airsoft as far as function goes), and a plethora of tippman A5 mods...which if you run the low-cap hopper and remote Co2 keep things a bit more simulation oriented.

Also paint does not ruin gucci gear- it is water soluble.

I play milsim paintball, but really it could be airsoft just as well- there just aren't any mature airsoft groups in my area.

Here's a couple links to companies who are leaders in milsim paintball:

Paintball all the way.
I think most of you only see the speed ball side of paintball. The small fields, the bright colorful jerseys. You don't realize there is a large and growing milsim paintball movement.
I understand why people love airsoft. Getting geared up and holding replica weapons feels great. But in the end it's just playing pretend. Most of the time you can't even feel the hits by the little pellets.
Paintballs HURT. And that's the main reason i prefer it. It adds that sense of danger to the game, instead of pretending and using your imagination. When you are behind cover and you hear those balls wizzing overhead its a rush. Pluse when a paintball breaks it's hard to cheat, makes the game fair, and fair means fun.

I play milsim paintball and we have our full 'kits' as well. Sure the guns aren't as realistic, but when you are in the heat of battle, you don't care how cool your gun's looking. But there are plenty of mods that make paintball guns look pretty convincing. check out Opsgear and you'll know what i mean. Aks, mp5s, m4s, G36s they got it. Also if your looking for heavy artillery check out RPG: http://www.rustyspaintballgear.com/

Don't forget the scenario games either. How often do you get to reenact D-Day with thousands of players in airsoft?
I play exclusively at SkirmishUSA and you are guaranteed to have a good time every time you go.
In conclusion I feel like I have to defend paintball because those speedballers have given this sport a wrong image. With milsim paintball I honestly feel it gives up very little to airsoft.

Paintball is milsim to an extent. The milsim aspect is in the imagination of the player, rather than the gear (with the exception of the bdu's).

In airsoft, the milsim in in the imagination of the player as well as the gear (tac vests, guns, lbv's, helmets, tactical goggles, etc etc) as well. The magazines fit into the real steal mag pouches as well. In essence, airsoft players' imagination of milsim INTERFACES with reality much more than paintball because airsoft has the gear to accomidate real steal replicas.

I like airsoft because the gun's ergonomics have been tried and tested. I like paintball because of the intensity of speedball. In the woods, though, I would play airsoft.

Regarding cheating, airsoft has them. Paintball has cheaters, regardless of the paint that marks them. I can name five different ways to cheat in a SPEEDBALL game, so imagine how many I can name for woodsball!

When it comes down to it, both are shooting games. I've played with a number of professional paintball players from the west coast, only we were using airsoft guns. We all had fun, and the paintball players tought airsofters about firefight communication, spotting players, team communication, and movement that is very similar to what special forces use: staying on the move and engaging targets aggresively. Airsoft players taught them about the patience, stalking, and gear. woot

I was wondering how do you MARSHAL airsoft??
Mostly, it's self marshalled, but a few factors limit cheating:

1) People try to think of it more as simulation than as a game - ie: take the competition out of it. If you get in the mindset that it's your strategy and skills that determine who "lives" or "dies", then you aknowledge when you've been beaten. Most times you play multiple missions or, for longer games, there are regens, so you aren't out for long.

2) Since most others have the mindset of 1), then if you are seen cheating, even by your teamates, you'll get talked to. Honest mistakes happen, but if it occurs more than once or twice, you probably won't be allowed back to play.

Basically, cheating will happen, but those who play take it seriously enough that it's minimized.

I have played paintball for close to ten years. I perfer paintball (woodsball) to airsoft.
Paintball has alot of problems with players trying to change what it is to something it isn't. Paintball started in the woods, some want to change it to some PC sport.

I think both airsoft and woodsball have their merits.

All of my gear for mill sim paintball is military- Black hawk omega vest (holds .68 cal tubes or RAM magazines), helmet (if I wear it), gloves, boots, bdu....The difference is I'm only concerned with functionality, not with mimicking the look of a particular soldier type.

But yeah, it's all good if it's mil sim- like I said before, we've got a couple guys on our paintball team who use airsoft sidearms...it all plays well together.
