Ouch!

How many men do you think this injured?

Is it 3 or 4 men that are needed to man a howitzer?

Wow...now that's a kaboom you really don't want to be around for. The only other time I'd heard of this happening was in one of the few AC-130 losses, in which the plane crashed because of a similar 'malfunction' with its 105mm gun.

The weapon is a Soviet designed D-30 122mm howitzer. they normally have a crew of 6. Can't tell the nationality from the pic though. Has been very widely sold.

When i was serving in the Arty we had a similar thing happen during a live firing exercise in Germany (1978) when a 105mm self propelled gun (Abbot) had a round prematurely discharge in the breech just as it had been loaded due to a fault in the electrical firing circuit, because the breech hadnt fully closed when it went off a lot of the explosion was blown back into the turret and two guys were killed and one seriously maimed.

A few years ago, a similar incident happen to Singapore Army during a live firing ex. in New Zealand. A faulty fuze cause the 155 shell to explode within the chamber killing 2 soldiers.

That is scary. It`s kind of crazy that those kind of accidents still happen, Is there any statistic, or is this kind of incident so random that it`s not worth to bother establishing any?

LOl, thats why i became and Op ack and just had to worry about them "dropping short" and landing on my head....

@gilgoul, i dont know what the statistics would be for this type of incident, but i know that whenever we went on excercise, let alone combat, there was an "acceptable" percentage of losses that were included into the figures for that particular time, things like "Tankies" sleeping under their vehicle only to find that the ground was too soft and they were crushed, people run over by armour etc in the dark while "tactical", live firing errors, normal accidents, rta's etc.
Ive known people who have died from all these incidents, and a lot more, an army in peactime isnt a safe place to be, and thats before they give you an enemy to face..... ;)

I had the "pleasure" to realize that myself :( while doing my compulsary service in France about ten years ago.
I don`t know if the rule of 7% is a urban legend or serious, but nevertheless, after not even 2 weeks of basic, during a night walk, a car crashed into a column of an other platoon in my sqaudron, nobody died this day, but 17 where injured, including one who lost his legs and an other who became hemiplegic.
A few weeks later one made a rather spectacular fall from a rope crossing and broke his spine, to be followed by a shooting incident, a suicide and a few month later one drowned, let say that we had our account even before the unit was sent on OD in french guiana.
As you say, you don`t necessarely need an enemy to get into trouble in this kind of job.
:D
