I'm leaning heavily towards purchasing a suppressor and even got the wife to agree. However due to me being in the Navy I'll be moving around a lot after Medical school including back to California.

So should I not even bother with a suppressor since I understand they are absolutely illegal in Cali? Anybody had any experiences regarding this?

Not that I know squat about US gun laws, but why not buy a can, use it until you move then sell it..
Or you could keep it but not "use" it because its illegal.
Its illegal to use, not to own right? Would make no sense to be arrested at state line for holding it in your hand and stepping over the state line..

California? I wouldn't bother. Not if its a personally owned one. Check here: http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/dwcl/12500.php

12501. Section 12520 shall not apply to, or affect, any of the following: (b) The possession of silencers by regular, salaried, full-time peace officers who are employed by an agency listed in Section 830.1, or by the military or naval forces of this state or of the United States when on duty and when the use of silencers is authorized by the agency and is within the course and scope of their duties.

haha

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like either I have to show that this is for my service in the Navy or I'm screwed. Good to know.

It takes 3-4 months to get your ($200) tax stamp processed for a suppressor. Not sure what your personal timing is for school. You can use it until you have to return to California certainly (you have to tell the feds when you carry it across state lines). But seriously - I've lived in Cali before. The onerous gun laws there are just one of many reasons I no longer do. Maybe this is an opportunity to revisit the notion of relocating to a more open-minded location.
