In the Danish army people that are issued with a pistol are issued the Sig 210, Neuhausen, an old warrior but nevertheless a good gun despite its
8 round mag.

The Canadian forces use 13 round, single action, Browning Hi-Power as the standard issue among the troops that may see some fighting, higher ranking officers who are unlikely to see combat but are still required to carry a sidearm are issued the double action, 8 round sig p225, both are chambered for 9mm para of course.

I'm not sure about all Infantry units but I do know that all officers and Ranger gun crews are issued the M9 Berreta for personnal defense. Let's say some poor pathetic terrorist got through the lines and came straight for you when you were reloading. Reach to your side, turn off the safety, use 6 rounds just to get his attention, use another 3 to kill him.

I had this insane Captain once, who swore that the only thing a pistol was good for was to control the unruly enlisted men under him!

I read something in the past few months that said a number of American soldiers in Afghanistan in 2001/2002 had chosen to arm themselves with privately purchased M1911 Gov't Models in .45. I'm sorry I can't provide the article, but I seem to remember that this was not just the SF bubbas, but 10th Mountain and 101st guys as well.

The pistol is used primarily for fighting yourself to a working long gun.

My brothers TA company commander had an innovative approach to pistol shooting
Brought himself a Fast draw leather belt holster. Got on the range attempted a quick draw sent the pistol some how flying through the air.
Range officer (already Nervous) Congratulations Sir you've passed
