KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Eight Afghan soldiers were mistakenly wounded by U.S.-led forces in a Taliban stronghold, the Defense Ministry said Sunday.
It was not clear if the troops, who were hurt Tuesday near Deh Rawood, 400 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Kabul in Uruzgan province, were hurt by U.S. ground troops or aircraft.
Four of the soldiers, who were all from the new U.S.-trained Afghan National Army, quickly returned to duty, the ministry said in a statement. The others were taken to a hospital, where two remain. Details of their injuries were not given.
The U.S. military had no immediate comment.
American forces have been involved in a string of so-called 'friendly fire' incidents since the start of the 2001 operation which routed the Taliban and its al-Qaida allies.
In 2002, four Canadian soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded when they were bombed by American forces.
Pat Tillman, a former American football player and U.S. Army Ranger, died April 22 probably from fire by his fellow soldiers after a mix-up in southeastern Afghanistan, investigators concluded.
Civilians have also been killed.
Last December, back-to-back American raids in southeastern Afghanistan killed 15 children, drawing protests from the Afghan government and the United Nations.
