The US Army Survival Handbook by the Department of the Army is excellent. I have it with me wherever I go, just to brush up on things.

Glad to point you in the right direction, but pleasepleaseplease don't buy a couple books and head off into the boonies thinking that's good enough...if you are smart enough to ask for good information, I'm sure you are smart enough to realize that just books isn't enough...I could bore you with instruction, but that's not gonna be useful...here is a link (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20100304/survival_death_natl_100304/20100304?hub=Canada) to a story about a guy that watched "survivorman" and went off and died.
Knowing is half the battle!

Lofty Wiseman's book is good. So are Tom Brown Jr's if you can ignore the spiritual mumbo jumbo.

Very true, but a book (or class/Boy Scouts) is a great place to start.

Army FM is good, but I don't know when you'll ever build the rafts they give you in there. What's sad is I never really learned things in the Scouts, before I got out we went backpacking once and brought in way too much. The clothes weren't the greatest for field wear, nice to know they've authorized some new stuff. I've learned the most stuff about Shelters from experience and the FM, although scout taught me some new stuff...well he had been an eagle scout. I wish I had learned the stuff then though. Honestly all you need is some strong bungee cords, six ten foot lengths of 550 cord, and E tool.

I've got the army one and the zombie one...hate to admit it but they both have good info in there. put a lot of the tips from the army manual to use when camping at about 8500 ft. on Mt Adams for a couple days, fun times had.

Lofty wiseman tops my list. However I still haven't found a survival book that doesn't have its shortcomings.
