Hi guys,
I've developed an interest in the 21st Mountain Battalion (Romanian elite troops) / vanatori de munte. I'd like to know (as it's hard to come by via a search on the internet) what their current equipment, weapons and uniforms are. Any help would be much appreciated. Ideally, I'd like to see up to date photos as well, if at all possible.
Cheers,
Adrian

theholeinthedonut - Thanks for these. There's a few I haven;t seen before so that's great. Do you know how many soldiers there would normally be in a team on an mission? I suppose it depends on what they have to do? Also, are they lead by a colonel or corporal? I'm unfamiliar with the ranking system for these guys. It gets a bit confusing.

Thanks. Do you mean this site? http://romanianspecialforces.com/vanatoridemunte.html
If so, I've got that one bookmarked and have used it alot, but it's a little out of date and I need the most recent info / pics on them. It is a very good site though, he was busy with all those other special forces pages too.

Sorry, I never found much information on the Vanatori de Munte, except in Romanian language, which I can't read. so I can't really help you.

Austra - Fixed what? Was that meant for bababooey? I've found a way to get the most recent info on the vanatori de munte as of last night. I pulled up some relevant Romanian sites and used the Google Translate tool to translate the Romanian pages. Translation isn't 100% but close enough to understand. Useful tool that! I've got a much better idea now of what gear they have, what they wear and what weapons they use currently.

He fixed the spelling, you posted the word "Romanian" which refers to people and nationality, when in reality you should have used the word "Romania" which indicates the Nation.

Hi Ranger, That was bababooey's fault, I didn't post that ;-) An easy mistake to make, probably just from typing too fast. Anyway, good to have you on the thread. Do you know much of the 21st Mountain Battalion?

Not a local myself, Anglo-Irish, but married to a local lady and living here in Transylvania, a Romanian friend of mine was one of the last military conscripts to be conscripted in 2005/2006 period for recruit training into the 21st Mountain hunters Battalion in Predeal, near Brasov, before they went over to using volunteers, they have probably updated some of their equipment in the last 5 years, but I would be surpised if all of their equipment is new.

Sounds interesting. What's it like to live in Romania then? I've only been there once and that was only on a short holiday. I plan to go back there one day. Is the friend you mentioned contactable by any chance? No worries if not, just thought I'd ask. it would be good to get first hand info (that's unclassified of course) from him. I appreciate though that keeping in touch with soldiers is hard as they don't get the chance to email etc much.
Are you in the military or just have an interest in it?

My service was with the Irish Defence Force, Regular Army from 1976 -1997 including service with U.N.I.F.I.L. in South Lebanon as a Peacekeeper. I came here for the first time in 2000, got married here in 2003, and love the place, the people are very friendly.
My buddy served 18 months conscription then left the Romanian Military, you can submit your questions by P.M.
to me and I will look for answers.
However you must understand the conscript period service differs from what is now regular military service.
And of course OPSEC will be maintained with regards questions asked and answered.
