Newly-arrived soldiers with the Canadian International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul, listen to a threat assessment briefing at Kabul International Airport, Afghanistan.

The troops are just starting their six month tour as part of Operation ATHENA, Canada's contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul.

Canada will contribute about 1,900 troops to the mission in the Afghan capital later this summer, making the Canadian contingent the second largest in ISAF. Currently this mission involves about 5,000 troops from 29 nations.

They have the Arid AR

they chose not to wear it.

They wanted to stand out to the civilian population from the other armies there.

Bull ish! Darker colors in the Muslim world are seen as more threatening, either they don’t have the Arid bdu's or there telling the taliban (local warlords) not to F*ck with them! IMHO

Right... did that come from the same DND Minister who said about two years ago, when asked by a reporter, that the reason Canadian troops in Afghanistan were wearing temperate camouflage in an arid desert was not because of choice, or because they weren't issued yet.....

.... but because the temperate camouflage in the desert would "disrupt" the patterns of our soldiers and sow confusion amongst the enemy?

That's going on the assumption that Mohammed and his Taliban buddies wouldn't clue in that those bushes with legs walking across the desolate wasteland were Canadian troops......

Of course, he did make a retracting statement later..... but alas.....

Most of these guys are in the theatre activation team.. so they'll be going home soon i think. maybe they didnt get issued the stuff..
anyways. they'll prolly wear the temperate woodland when there in and around kabul. if they ever have to patrol for soem reason way outside of the city limits thats when we'll most likely see the Arid region stuff.

according to one newspaper report, cdn forces have been advised to look as "un-american" as possible by the head of the german battle group whom the cdns are replacing:

"The Canadians have already taken steps to distinguish themselves from other international forces, including opting for green combat fatigues rather than the desert browns so popular among Germans, Australians, Britons and Americans. "
