Nice. Quite a recoil boot too by the looks of it. We had bullet-trap HEAT grenades for the SA80 back in the early 90s. Great fun to shoot.

The SIMON is rather old news.

If I remember correctly it got some sort of award from the U.S Army a while back for its successful use in Iraq.

Yeah, my unit tested those when we were in Iraq in 2005. Very nice piece of equipment when it works properly. Some of them wouldn't explode if the door you shot it at wasn't sturdy enough or you hit glass, leaving a nice UXO for you improvise a way to blow (Claymore). They are a bitch to carry around though due to their awkward shape and two piece design. But overall, still worth it.

(Yeah, my finger is in the way. So shoot me.)

I've got some good videos of them knocking dudes in the face, too. The recoil is crazy.

Yeah I was issued those for Cast Lead, fun stuff, but only if you've got room in front of the door. They are only armed after flying a certain distance. We were also issued special stocks with a thick rubber end to help with the recoil and a special flash suppressor (I think that's what it is in english, starshaf in Hebrew).

From the guys that have used them, how far off from the door does the entry team need to be?

I don't know the prescribed distance, but I would go with about 10 feet unless really needed otherwise. I was looking at some of my old videos after this thread came up and the explosion from the round doesn't really go out much to the sides. I'd still be scared the guy shooting it might miss by a little bit though...

From Wiki:
- A variant of the SIMON 120 is in service with the U.S. Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Army) as the M100 Grenade Rifle Entry Munition (GREM). Changes from the original specification involved fuzing and reliability issues.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIMON_breach_grenade#cite_note-2) An inert round, the M101 GREM-Target Practice (GREM-TP) allows training for accuracy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accuracy) without the explosive hazard. The system was given a U.S. Army award as one of the top 10 best inventions of 2005.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIMON_breach_grenade#cite_note-3)

Will it also work on doors that open outwards? I.e. will the shock break the door itself or just the locking mechanism?

For those who have BTDT, why is it an advantage to be able to open the door from a distance as opposed to when everyone is already on the perimeter of the building.

The Future Weapons video said that the Rafael version had a minimum fire distance of 15m. Is opening a door at that range viewed as an advantage?

I appreciate the posting of those who have used it. It's very interesting to read about.

You get the door opened, any ****y traps blown and anyone else inside in shock. The stack goes in clean up and let the big guy sort them out.

The disadvantage to this is that you DO need at least 15 meters in front of the door and you have to hit it straight on, so no firing from an angle pretty much other than facing the door. In tight urban areas this can be next to impossible. The idea is great, but it needs to be refined. There was only one opportunity I ever had to fire it, and to do so I was basically on my own (obviously my team was covering me but still) in the middle of an open area in the gaza strip. Not fun.

Looks like some pretty wicked recoil.

Orders says 25 meters. in field, you'd just get the team waiting around a corner, be it 10 or even less meters from the door. the shooter will use the corner a hide ("opening the corner" as we call it here) and shoot.
Form my experience, if you gonna break yourself an opening from a distance you better use a "Wall-key"/Matador rocket and rip the house a new one. If you just wanna blow away the door, use door breaching charge.

they should have made it quarter of it's size, bot in length and power, so you could just pull it from a pouch, snap it on your barrel and shoot it on the fly. you don't really need all this fuss and fireworks, and you don't have to make the whole door disappear in order to go through it. a much smaller explosive projectile would have been much much better
