Not so long ago, I bought this cheap rifle, I believed it is was a Argentine mauser 1891, the crest was burned of and some parts are missing ( and apparently there is no way to buy them in Belgium, you just have to be lucky to find them), but mechanic it is still in good shape. Just a few seconds ago I found out it has the latter sights of a Peruvian mauser 1891 ( they took over some of the Argentine stock and used them in the Peruvian-columbian war and they are scarcer) But I can't identify the frontsight, does anyone know where it came from, is it new? is it from another rifle?
thank you.

^ What he said. That is one f*cked up looking rifle. Is it an optical illusion or is the front of the barrel near the muzzle bent too?
I'd have to say it's anything but mechanically sound...

the argentine army destroyed the original markings when they sold them, this has been done in various ways, I've seen versions where they scrached it away with a needle, or they would melt some metal on it or just burn it off, in this case it was done rather amateuristic

optical illusion, yes, the rifle has not been treated well, the former owner removed the original cleaning rod and threw it away, replacing it by something selfmade, he also cleaned the outside of the barrel, leaving a lot of scratches, normally I would never even consider buying such a rifle but a friend of mine offered it for a very low price, so, but it is still very accurate, and the stock is still in a good shape

Yes they are not something you would like to see on a rifle, I'm trying to get rid of it at a reasonable price now, it is jut that the front sight makes me wonder where it came from, I can't find any picture or model with that sight, and it's not new, just wondering

he attached a brush on the side that is inside the rifle, I have no idea why, actually it is hard to see something like this , a rifle almost 120 years old and then some white trash dude comes along and ruins it, by removing the finish, cleaning rod, upperhandguard, and sling attachments.

Some people feel that change means your making it better *wink wink cough cough*

Wall Hanger bro, don't even think of Shooting that thing. Someone cut the barrel down, added that unknown front sight. Those bulges if they were welded on likely affected the temper of the steel on the barrel and receiver. You're right about the Peru connection. It might be worth more as parts: magazine, trigger, and esp. the Lange Sight to a Gewehr 98 collector looking to restore to WWI configuration.

yes it was probably not such a bright idea to shoot it, and yes maybe selling it as parts is the best I can do, wouldn't like to see the next buyer getting hurt when he tries it out

Are you sure it's Argentinian? It looks a lot like the Belgian M1889. Whatever it was it seems to have had a Gew98 rearsight fitted though.

that's because the argentine mauser was copied from the belgian and turkish mauser but the Belgian m1889 is different, a lot more beautifull, rearer, much more expensive and have much more historic value, they have seen service through 2 world wars, so...
If I ever got my hands on a Belgian M 1889, I would never ever consider doing it away, nomather how bad it would look. And that is the problem they are seldom for sale

IIRC, Hopkins & Allen & B.S.A. made some of the Originals for Belgium as FN was spinning up
