That's pretty much the only available pics of the XM8. As you can see, it's not the real working gun - it's a model. You can also see the scope is not real.
On the other hand - this is supposed to be the updated look of both the XM8 and the XM29. no more big plastic monster, but a smaller, slimmer and lighter gun.

Firstly...thats just a model of what the finished version should/will look like...roughly.

Secondly...it IS a G36. Whats the difference? A- a different Mag well to accept M16-type mags instead of G36 Mags. B- the plastic casing- which is almost purely asthetical- is a little different. oh, and C- the intigrated optics is not the same model as on the G36E

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The XM8 project is a waste of time and money. It would be easier to go to H&K and say "Give us a G36E in carbine length that will take M16 mags."

Alas....politics really f*cks up something that could be so damn simple.

first off if they wanted to keep anything simple then they wouldnt bother with a new rifle to replace the m16 unless it did something new, like fire a new caliber or has improved capablities, not just a baby step.

i think this is a plan to try and keep the xm29 project alive as their have been no improvement to the system for 4 years. i feel the reason that they used the g36 for the oicw was because they wanted to save every ounce they could and it would be hard to do with the m16 because of the buffer tube. and i am hearing that the money to replace the m16 is just not there, we are in debt and many soldiers dont even have desert pattern bdus. now why the hell introduce a new rifle that does the same thing arguably a little better. plus since they cant completely replace the m16 they will have two different systems that do the same thing and costing us millions of dollars.

the only thing that would justify a replacement in my opinion is if nato adopted a new caliber or something new like the an94 or a balanced rifle was adopted.

notice that the marines, navy and airforce have no plans for this new rifle at all.

Some of what you say is true, however, there are quite a few features of the XM8 which make it superior to the G36 line. It comes with more accessorys built in (Lasers, tactical lights), and it has the abillity to switch calibers. The 7.62x39mm AK47 round is the prominent alternative claiber as of now, and the 6mm is getting alot of air time as well.

i thought there was a huge difference in the mechanics that would keep the inside of the gun cleaner and stop jams. they said something like the m-4 blows carbon right back into the chamber and this new gun would'nt which would be a huge difference.
