Hey all,

Odd question, staring down at my kit bags and what not, and I thought to myself, What the hell is that criss crossed elastic string on the front of bags for? I mean, was it designed to put ones jacket in there perhaps when your not wearing it.

Here is a little pack I own, in the photo(bottom left of the photo) you can see the elastic I am talking about

http://www.platatac.com/short-range/plat-a-tac-crow-day-pack/w1/i1001676_1023950/

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as curiosity simply got the better of me.

Cheers

It helps deflate and allow to air dry the Commonwealth's issue "inflatable morale mate" (http://www.femplay.com.au/woman/storming-stella-inflatable-sheep-blow-up-sheep.html?ref=1171) when breaking camp. All other uses are strictly forbidden.

It's called a "daisy chain" and can be used as A) Compression of the pack or B) Attachment system for something (like a jacket) or C) Both

I'm with you here.
This is one feature I rarely use, due to it not being secure to store anything.
But it is damn useful to kind of compress the bag, unless you go around in bushes (then it gets systematically entangled in branches and stuff.
I cut mine and replaced with velcro straps on elastic bands.

I use it to put my poncho/cover on it. Things always wet and dirty, better to put it there.. and it saves me some room inside of my bag.

It was originally designed to fasten crampons on the sack.
