Am I correct that the Body used was a crewman from the HMS Dasher that sank in the Clyde after an Internal Explosion ...

My review;

I just finished Op Mincemeat. I read alot, military history being a favorite subject of mine. When I turned the last page, I both smiled widely and felt saddened that it had ended. It is a very detailed and intimate look into the shady world of WWII intelligence services, on both sides. I've known about the operation and "Major Martin" for some time. I was expecting a nice read, but nothing too exciting or new. I was wrong.

The plan and the execution can't be told otherwise, so I found myself not getting new info. The real worth of the book is found in the details.

Like most books, it has photographs and maps. Unlike most books, it places these items at intervals in proportion with the story. You will read about a part of the tale, then turn a page and stare someone in the face who you just learned about.

It also refuses to fall into the old trap of injecting unnamed characters into the story without explanation or characterbuilding. Everytime the story of Major Martin touched somebody, wheter they were ally or foe, that person's life is explained in a small paragraph without being intrusive or distracting.

Humour comes with the book as naturally as the suspense. I rarely laugh out loud reading, but this book has given me ample opportunity. Take for example this passage on a person taking part in the invasion of Sicily; "His rations, he was delighted to find, contained "tea-sugar-and-milk-powder", which could be brewed simply by adding hot water. "Most nourishing, appetising and intelligent" thought Drick. Then he was dive-bombed. This, he told his mother in a letter, "added zest to the party" http://www.lightfighter.net/smilie/24.gif

I look forward to reading the rest of the books. If they are 50% as good as Op Mincemeat, it's gonna be a blast!

It's a phenomenal book. It's worth the money. Buy it. http://www.lightfighter.net/smilie/thumbup.gifYou will love this little trivia.

The man who planned Op Mincemeat is called Montagu. He plays a small role in the movie.

Ironically his character opposes the plan :lol:
